In the past months of posting here on PV-AN alot of people have head their portfolios up for discussion and critical slander. But theres one thing ive noticed.
When the site is very simple, not much graphics, it does work but it looks quiet ugly, people on here say, yeah its great, to the point, lovely bit of design. On the other hand, when someone submits a site that is heavliy designed, full of artistic features really displaying the creators personality, almost everyone on here has the tendancy to kick it in the balls.
Fair enough if its crap its crap, but ive seen some sites which you can tell have taken alot of man hours, dont look wonderful but nice enough and theyve taken the worst verbal beating ever. The designer probably cried and gone and changed it so its a boring, lifeless, funtional site just so he can get the praise they deserve on PV-AN.Theres alot of meanies on here when it comes to that, wonder what it is that makes us criticise so.......

its a designers job to be critical!

good point. so thats why were assholes.
Theres more to pick at when its a more detailed site, think thats why them kind of sites get 'done in' most

RE: Simplicity
sometimes the hardest thing is knowing what to cut out.
RE: Meanies
I think sometime designers forget to appreciate the work of their peers... as art, or what have you... but on the other hand, when someone posts their portfolio, i generally look for the faults first. Thats what I do with my own work, so it comes naturally when i assess other peoples work.

kind of a shame sometimes the way we constantly analyse our graphic surroundings, everyone else just enjoys, we nit pick.
good for career
- gabe0
simply designed rather than designed simplicitly, if that makes any sense.
oh yeah, the kid's only 17!

even if a site is shit hot... a designer will always see a negative.

frankvandiver.com very nice........but i was talkin about simple sites like, no graphics, just text and lines and boxes etc.........but they look truly awful ....frankvandiver was simple but looked good..
anyway it was just a passing thought i had, something i noticed, thought i'd share
- gabe0
yeah, i agree, i've noticed it as well; though it only really runs rampant where anonymity is a factor.
i pointed out the frankvandiver site because i thought it was a nice mixture of good design and simplicity.

"no graphics, just text and lines and boxes"
son of a bitch!
thats what my site looks like.
*sniff*
- _mak0
it is! and the guy is only 17?!
Were gonna get over taken by the younger generations, i can see it now, they might not have the design knowledge, but their technical skills are going to surpass alot of peoples.
frankvandiver has design talent.
its something you have, you dont learn it, just fine tune it. technical knoweldge can be learned
- _mak0
dont stress neeko, you have the technical talent......
but your site seems a little dry, visually, good stuff on there tho'
I just love design that brings you into its environment, creates its world around u (or as close as), i like that shit!
- gabe0
"its something you have, you dont learn it..."
well said!
- _mak0
gabe- love your site, thats what im talkin about....
dont bother goin to mine, i just put it together quick because some people needed to see my work, and i wasnt just gonna email it.
I really need to think about takin my flash skills to the next level, back in college we did a really shite project with flash and its made me hate it ever since!! damn u!
- neeko0
"your site seems a little dry"
the "dry" look is the next big thing. im ahead of my time.
dammit.
- neeko0
but ya, gabe's site is amazing.

I reckon it's because modernism is seen as stylish because it has firm artistic and theoretical roots. And is carried on today by Conran et al. It's understood to be good, so it is easy to say, it's good. Your kind of post modern technological style doesn't have an established benchmark (like Bauhaus is for Modernism) so each piece will be heavily critiqued without an understood reference.
Oh, and it's fashion, minimalism is always seen as cool and educated.

Well, the first time I designed my portfolio, I spent time on it and put personality into it, but after all that i had a site that I liked, but wasn't easily updated and added to. so i made a newer simpler site when i was applying for new jobs.
so maybe since most of the pv-an is people seeking jobs, you've got simple, to-the-point sites.
but then again gabe's site has a lot of personality and is easily update-able(so it seems) so i guess i just wrote a lot of stuff and now i've got no way out and i like honey bunches of oats.

neeko: your site is fantastic. I was admiring it earier. what is this 'dry' btw? it's a question of style. apples and oranges.
gabe: only one words comes to mind...badass.
I find that
4/5 designers will crit a site. and 1/4 know what they are talking about.I'm in the 3/4 box. (clueless)
- Blofeldt0
If you ask for a critique that's what you'll get. If you want someone to say it's great ask you mum.

i like harsh crit
helps me grow
but not just you suck
