My career as a designer.
Been out of work since June 2024. What do you think I can do for the rest of my working life (15/20 years)?
Wrong/right/sarcastic answers only.

- Maybe you can retire early in a lower cost economy, like Somalia? Average annual income is under $600 USD, for $6k you're good for a decade.everyangle

- We've all been through those ups and downs, as long as you keep learning skills and kickstarting your own projects you will bounce back for sure. Hang in there!spl33nidoru

but anyway, what kind of design do you do?
Plenty of jobs for UXUI designers everywheregrafician - Maybe plenty of jobs but even more applicants. Been looking for something new since March. Getting interviews and making it to final few but not the final cut.microkorg
- Where do you want to work?
What are your former colleagues doing?bainbridge - Looker Studio... there's still an element of design in those.canoe
- Agreed about how many UX/UI jobs there area but they seem so vastly different from what I do - motion design, even though they use the same job title.CyBrainX
- I was in the same position...
but thankfully, a good buddy of mine that's a project manager had recently moved to work at a local electric utility ...exador1 - i was talking to him, and got an offer to join him there as his UI/UX guy...contracting, but it's full-time contract, and he has YEARS worth of projects coming.exador1
- so that's worth exploring...not sure where you are, but look into gigs at unlikely places like utility companies, medical companies etc...exador1
- also, what saved my ass was KNOWING the right people, and them knowing and valuing me...exador1
- not sure what your network is like, but basically hit up every single person you've worked with, co-worker to client...exador1
- and see if there's any stones you haven't turned over yet so to speak...exador1

- Any hobbies / interests you can turn into a sustainable (money and mind) thing?canoe
- I hate to say it, but I agree with utopian re: AI. It's a whole new realm.
For a while, at least.Nairn - I completely pivoted ~8 years ago. Started saying yes to any “building” work. Ended up making sets for SNL and other shops, & now run the floor at one of them.hardhat
- ^ username chks out...
OP>I'm in the same boat... i'm making ends meet freelancing and helping out brands here and there but its not so sustainable... yes toAI_me_ - flipping burgers? doing something with your hands? something AI cant replace for the upcoming 10 years at least..milfhunter
