Random idea just popped into my head: do you think people ever think up and design a band identity - name, stylistic approach, art, etc. for a band that doesn't exist yet and somehow sell that identity to a new band?

It would have to be a totally new band, I realize that bands rarely "rebrand." But maybe for an established artist starting something new?

No idea if people do this. Just popped into my head while getting some fresh air at work.

    • When you go to behance, I noticed, that a LOT of non US designers make up brands and use them as example projects...canoe
    • There's also tons of premade logos to buy...canoe
    • Am I not understanding your question migs?canoe
    • You're getting it. :)
I had a cool band name pop into my head and immediately had ideas for what it would sound like, look like, etc.

    • And I mean "band" as in music (not a misspelling of "brand.")mg33
    • Just no idea if it's common to craft a full fictitious band identity and look for a band that would pay for it.mg33
    • Ex, if someone were looking for a cool name and identity for a doom / psych / shoegaze band, if would be perfect.mg33
    • Egos too strong in bands to have second hand work cut out for them

      Works with other industries tho

    • Bands have stories, all kinds of lore, you can never replace that with a new brand
      ********
    • But you can always do that with FMCG brands, a soda is just a soda with a new branding
      ********
    • Maybe you should launch it yourself? you can partner with a producer/musician. That's roughly the Gorillaz origin story.monNom
    • Or learn a little audio production, lean on AI, whatever. Easy to put your music out there these days.monNom
    • No doubt, but working with artists, they were always the voice and me as a designer was more implementing their vision

Again very strong egos in artists

    • My best buddies are DJs so this discussion came up already, but no, they have their strong identities and styles
Very hard to remix something for them

    • @mg33 maybe look into this:

      https://x.com/prebra…

Pieratt had something going on with prebrands for tech startups

    • A company I freelance for had a client whose schtick was creating off the peg identities for bands / musicians. Album covers, videos, the whole lot. Awful shiteFax_Benson
    • I should mention for anyone who doesn't remember, I'm a musician. Working on my own thing now, called The Ageless Sea.mg33
    • I could see using this with a friend as a combo project.mg33
    • It's just not authentic, nobody can resonate with that I guess
      ********
    • Graf - that all makes sense. Having had bands and come up with names, graphics, sites, it was for sure personal to the story, theme, etc.mg33
    • We changed our name from The Atlantic Divide to Looming Lights after five years when we were gonna try to make a bigger go of things.mg33
    • I was too locked into ocean stuff with the old name, but LOL here I am years later with a solo project called The Ageless Sea. :Dmg33
    • I was replying to Fax Benson with that comment about authenticity
      ********
    • The Ageless Sea sounds good, maybe run with it?
      What kind of music genre?
      ********
    • Graf - instrumental / ambient. Album is in progress, but I stepped away to focus on the prints I'm making and selling. (From the generative art I've made.mg33
    • Small sample of tunes

    • What is punk rock?tbgoodwillie
    • Maybe use the tunes to generate some graphics? Or at least some videos for the tracks?

Good luck my man the tunes are good vibes!

    • Go on bandcamp too, that's were the music is these days

    • Nearly every band or musical group I’ve encountered already has a brand identity—usually something created by a sister...utopian
    • ...cousin, or close friend—that they’re emotionally attached to and unwilling to reconsider or rebrand.utopian
    • Marilyn Manson had created his band's identity and as a journalist, wrote articles about the group before any actual performance. MANIFEST!!bezoar
    • The Ageless Sea is a great nameyuekit
    • When I briefly worked for music industry clients, I sometimes did treatments for one act, which then ended up with another.Horp
    • Thanks yuekit! Like I said, put it on hold, but it's been fun working on art for it. Lots of time looking at old Cousteau books, mimicking old paper ocean imagemg33
    • and finding a good font that looks a lot like heavyweight fonts that were used in those books.mg33
    • migs, this sounds a bit like something that Thrill Jockey would've put out. Love the reverb on the drum! Perhaps using Slate+Ash for the plucky stuff?canoe
    • Also sounds quite west coasty toocanoe
    • +10canoe
    • You scuba mg? PADI diver since 1990 over herecanoe
    • Thank you canoe! Haven't used Shape + Ash. Plucky stuff... are you referring to that looping piano sound that is consistent? If so...mg33
    • that's the Olafur Arnalds Stratus looping. That plugin is amazing. Otherwise, that's me playing guitar over the top of it.mg33
    • I've never dived/dove. Snorkeled in several places. I wish I did, and had a baller underwater camera. Have some ideas for abstract water images for the project.mg33
