Got a rushed project, about 12 days to finalize 'x'. Hired me for 'x' an hour. Averaged around 7-8 hours a day, some going longer, some going lighter, but all around, about 72 hours billable.
Well, they had to call me to tell me this was 'double' what the other designers put in, pretty much saying it made them feel 'icky', 'gross', which pretty reflected on me, thus I'm the gross one, etc.
Hours were solid, I counted for ALL time spent on the project, including research, and the bullshit comps the CD wanted, even though I knew it wouldn't work, but hey, hourly.
Just made me feel like shit, and inferring i was abusing shit and taking advantage. Been doing this for 20 years and tend to not do that because I like return clients, vs one offs. Fucking hell, threw me into a fucking depression since I 'eat, love, pray' this design life.
anyway, joys of being freelance. Guess I just need to get flat rates vs going with what they offer for hourly.
- You’re a master. They don’t deserve you if they are gonna whine about this.monospaced
- would of been different if they said this went beyond the budget, would you be good with this. VS making me feel like shit as if i cheated them.hydro74
- I would find one of those designers.********
- Definitely go w/the flat rate if you can... sorry you're feeling shit on, man <3PonyBoy
- What I don't get is that why you didn't gave them an offer with a time estimate?********
- ^^ @sted they offered terms, and the client that was being designed was one I wanted in on.hydro74
- @sted I am down to any of your insight, how to counter. Serious, love to synchydro74
- It was their terms and someone with your credentials shouldn't have to justify the hours. It's their comments that are gross and unnecessary.palimpsest
- Yeah fuck them. I battle with is all the time, I end up feeling guilty when I bill my actual hours and see that it’s a great pay day which is so wrong._niko
- I’m sure the CEO doesn’t feel icky when he looks at his or her pay check every other week. They hired Hydro, they pay for Hydro god dammit_niko
- And the double what the other designers put in comment is pure trash, you’re not digging ditches, you’re creating works or art FFS “be creative faster! Fuck off_niko
- They gambled that they might get it cheaper if they paid hourly instead of paying a fixed price where you assume the performance risk. Doesn’t always work out.monNom
- Do you really want this client if they are going to fix the terms, then whinge when you follow the terms they laid out?monNom
- The ‘other designers’, if they exist, may not have delivered near the quality nor complexity of what you did. Or their style of work may be quicker to produce.monNom
- I can type out a word in some font and call it a logo. I can go through 1,000 iterations of a single idea to find the best one. 2 ‘logos’, 2 different prices.monNom
- And two different standards of when the logo is ‘done’. They sought your work because your standard is high. The time required to achieve that standard is highmonNom
- ..er than a lesser standard.monNom
- Clients like this make me feel 'icky' & 'gross'. Been there.webazoot
- Dude just so you know, I've admired your work for like 20 years now. Don't doubt yourself or let this shit get to you. You are a top notch professional!nocomply
- Thanks for the support. 20+ years in and still trying to pretend I know what I’m doing. Fun to see they axed me from the pitch just because I was honest hourly.hydro74
