A new study finds more evidence of coronaviruses circulating in trafficked pangolins, including a previously unknown coronavirus from bats with a "furin cleavage site"...which is a feature lab leak supporters like Matt Ridley constantly use to suggest it SARS-2 was genetically engineered.

    • Of course it was...thank you China!utopian
    • "We successfully isolated MjHKU4r-CoV-1 in Caco-2 cells from a pangolin anal swab sample." Sick fuckssausages
    • Micky?robotinc
    • The transgenic mouse in that diagram would tend to corroborate the lab leak theory.monNom
    • The first line of the report is..."It is unknown whether pangolins, the most trafficked mammals, play a role in the zoonotic transmission of bat coronaviruses."Morning_star
    • @yeukit How have you come to the conclusion that this evidence contradicts lab leak theories?Morning_star
    • The Florida surgeon general was appointed for the sole purpose of winning anti vax and conspiracy theory science denying votes for desantis.monospaced
    • Don’t ignore the fact that the entire medical community disagrees publicly with this clown. They are only the trained experts after all.monospaced
    • Once again it’s absolutely ridiculous to think that all trained professionals are somehow conspiring to liemonospaced
    • Hi mono, This isn't about the Florida Surgeon General. It's about the evidence that yuekit posted <<< and how he's concluded that the evidence...Morning_star
    • ...contradicts the lab leak theory. Because as far as I can see, it doesn't. The very first sentence of the article says that theirs no evidence to support...Morning_star
    • ...the jump of coved from bat to pangolin. Any ideas?Morning_star

    • Morning_star, it doesn't disprove the lab leak theory. But people will often point to one feature of the virus, the furin cleavage site, to argue that it wasyuekit
    • engineered. This shows that the same feature can evolve naturally in pangolins, which are known to carry the closest viruses to SARS-CoV-2 in nature.yuekit
    • So it's another clue about the origin, not contradicting or disproving that the virus came from the lab but suggesting it didn't need to.yuekit
    • my comments were meant for the previous post, obviouslymonospaced
    • y'know the one you posted, where the first words are "The Surgeon General in Florida" and then you wonder if it's truemonospaced
    • @yuekit have a listen to the Sam Harris podcast I posted. Love to know your perspective..Morning_star
    • Is it the one with Matt Ridley and Alina Chan that just came out? I'll give it a listen... in general I think the idea the virus came from lab research isn't ayuekit
    • crazy conspiracy. I wouldn't put it in the same category as 5G cell towers causing the pandemic :) But I do think people exaggerate the case for it.yuekit
    • In particular I think they wrongly interpret the lack of evidence for an animal origin as automatically pointing to the lab. When in reality, the CCP covers upyuekit
    • all kinds of things, even stupid ones, and may simply not want to take responsibility for the pandemic.yuekit
    • And here's the problem, it's once again a topic where people with some knowledge but who aren't domain experts step forward and present themselves as experts.yuekit
    • That describes Alina Chan, a post doc researcher who isn't a virologist and Matt Ridley, a science writer with a history of embracing conspiracies.yuekit
    • I know it's super uncool these days to say we should listen to experts but you really have to note the fact that very few virologists think it was a lab leak.yuekit
    • If you want to hear the other side I'd suggest listening to some of the interviews on this channel...I got to know the two guys doing the interviews via Twitteryuekit
