I know its not entirely the fault of the Metaverse.. but is anyone else sensing we are about to have a Web 2.0 crash .. twitter is fucked, facebook/insta is currently being fucked.. what's left? TikTok?

been reading articles from 2001 this afternoon about all the companies that went down in dot.com bust v1 ...
    feels super familiar timing

    • About time. Get that trash outta here.dibec
    • Not quite. Most of these companies were on massive hiring sprees for years. If they hadn’t taken such risks, they’d have fewer to layoff now.nb
    • The thinking was, “get as much talent as we can, regardless of cost” and now economic slowdown suggests we won’t need them.nb
    • Social media engagement has also been falling for a while nowChimp
    • Yes, the market is slowing, engagement and advertising is slowing. But also, meta won’t be smaller (employee count) than it was years agonb
    • Keep in mind, these companies don’t sit outside the stock market. They make up a big part of it.nb
    • HUGE difference is Meta has boatloads of cash to burn. Dotcom it was all promises. That said, the promise of VR was almost the same then.formed
    • I worked in real-time 3D back then. I got a nice chuckle how people were saying the exact same thing with graphics that are almost identical!formed
    • Don’t get social media mixed up with tech in general. All medium to large ( and many small) need tech. 100k openings for cloud programmers and only 20k availtoemaas
    • facebook's valuation was always daft and propped up for years by aquisitions that it's driven in to the ground farming users for ad revenuekingsteven
    • it has brought nothing new to the table and it's eventual collapse 100% inevitablekingsteven
    • I can't understand why this would at all be anything to do with FB's Metaverse bullshit. That's ass about face, with FB having long seen the writing on the wallNairn
    • Long live Web3!%sted
    • Die internet, diedrgs
    • I think metaverse was a distraction for a train they saw a mile away. 3rd party cookie/customer attribution is what made them so valuable. That's all going awaymonNom
    • We’ve just had a decade of dirt cheap money. Capital cost nothing. Interest were super low. Money went to tech and crypto. Now it crashes.shapesalad
    • Rinse and repeat. Fed and central banks all repeat the same mistakes over and over.shapesalad
    • Is said long live Web3!sted
