I think I can finally put into words why the last decade feels different. I couldn't get a sense of what's in anymore. I thought it was because I was getting older, but then I realized: decentralization of trends -- in fashion, music, design, everything.

I will argue that after MTV's TRL died, there is no pop music anymore. Internet killed all trend-setting institutions. MTV's death is a sign in itself.

The trends of the past decades were absolute and all-sweeping, came from few sources and replaced each other rapidly. Current period is flowing very slowly and has no definition to it. I don't know if its good or bad...

    Debate in groups of 3.

    • I see an element of this for sure. There are trends but it seems that if they arise they are shorter lived and by fewer people. Maybe I’m saying the same thing.monospaced
    • Maybe too many trends, but none of them are "in" -- in the old sense of the word, when everyone would do one thing, and then jump over to something newdrgs
    • it just means you no longer have small group of people telling people what's trendy. or harder.pango
    • you like what you like. stop following trends. unless it's your job to know whats trendy. then your job just got harder.pango

    • Shifting trends give a feeling of novelty and progress. The last 15 years have been completely frozen in timedrgs

    • Since everything is on demand, can be personalized so much and the supply is greater, people care less about trends. That should be a good thing.CyBrainX
    • but I'm not sure the results have been better. If you're willing to seek out what you like, you're way better off than decades ago.CyBrainX

    • There are trends, but everything is incredibly fragmented these days. It's actually somewhat freeing, IMOjagara
    • Trend rotation puts expiration on things, which is a good thing. Say, 1 decade of lilac hair is bearable. 3 decades? Nodrgs
