As of today, I live in Frankfurt (Germany) for 25 years. The city is not as great as it used to be and I would like to move.

My problem is that I don't know where to. I have not found a nice place on earth yet where my type of work would be possible and I could afford living.

And I also don't know where to move within Germany.

    • Fuck, Simon, we're both having a similar mindset.Continuity
    • All I can tell you is: avoid Berlin. It's a shit sandwich.Continuity
    • Yes, Berlin and Munich aren't on my list. I'd like to find a smaller town, such as Hilversum (NL) but in Germany. Haven't found anything ok yet.SimonFFM
    • I'm not *too* familiar with smaller towns, except Passau, where my ex-GF is from. Admittedly, it's super-charming, though.Continuity
    • You could always try somewhere like Barcelona. I would bet anything you'd make a killing in your line of work, there.Continuity
    • How can I earn money in Barcelona? I would not know how, really.SimonFFM
    • By doing what you do now? :\Continuity
    • I work self-commissioned 90% of the time. I like BCN, but would rather move to Sitges then. Spain makes it difficult to move there, though (tax wise).SimonFFM
    • Antwerp? Lots going on but has small-ish town feel.Fax_Benson
    • Denmark?Fax_Benson
    • Antwerp is a really cool place, actually.Continuity
    • Move in with grafician, start a web series.palimpsest
    • Tulum?Krassy
    • Yep, taxes are harsh in Spain. But the beer is cheap. Lisbon perhaps?Chimp
    • I enjoyed Leipzig but maybe it’s not small enough. Also I haven’t been to Germany in 6 years

    • only towns i'm familiar with in Germany are Gütersloh and Meinz. got cousins and aunts/uncles in both. Gütersloh is pretty quiet, but very nice, relaxed etc..exador1
    • I thought Meinz was super nice as well... i suppose it depends on what you're looking for... If i was younger, i'd enjoy Meinz..nice medium size city etc...exador1
    • but at my age (49) I think i'd be more comfortable in Gütersloh... small town, familiar, walkable, nice pubs etc...exador1
    • Dont move to Tulum lol just visit.

I suggest discovering a small town and making that your home.

    • What about Hamburg? Is it any good?hotroddy
    • Thanks for your ideas! Portugal is nice, but my Portugese is very basic. Would have to convince my wife, too. Maybe Austria. I will keep on looking.SimonFFM
    • Really thanks for the suggestions! I also need an international airport. Only benefit of Frankfurt...SimonFFM
    • How about a small town in the vicinity of Portland Oregon? Mild temps, cheap food/energy, int'l airport. most exotic dancers of any US city. Nice scenery.monNom
    • Lisbon. Most young people or middle age speak english. In the creative world surely.oey_oey
    • I'm gonna move to Leipzig in August. 3 years after loosely planned. Berlin was an option that ended in 2014. Leipzig is not very multi-ethnic but has other plusoey_oey
    • In The Netherlands: Why Hilversum, of all places? Check Maastricht.stewart
    • Braga.shapesalad
    • I only spent a small time in Sitges, but it was lovely. If you could make $$ work, it would be a good choice.BuddhaHat
    • Berlin, Berlin, Wir fahren nach Berlinautoflavour
    • I like Denmark, but I would instantly be a poor guy. I cannot afford Scandinavia.SimonFFM
    • @stewart Hilversum was only a metaphor for a small city not far from a big one and overall a chill place. I will check Maastricht, thanks!SimonFFM
    • My wife said no to Lisbon.SimonFFM
    • Did she offer any counter-suggestions?Continuity
    • ^hills, many hillspablo28
    • Not sure how it is in Germany but i would not try the Netherlands if you are planning to buy a house. The housing market is a shitshowmilfhunter
    • vienna sounds like an optioncock-a-doodle-doo
    • A friend of mine moved from Amsterdam to Hilversum.oey_oey
    • If I was single now and had to move or decided to move outside Germany and stay in central Europe I would probably choose Antwerp.oey_oey
    • Barcelona is crazy. As in crazy good. Don't know about working market.oey_oey
