We use one of those wee food scrap council bins for our veggie waste, which when full gets hoyed into the ad hoc compost bin iI made and which my partner hates and in turn despises me for.

Clearly it's been a lot longer since I last emptied it than I thought and i'm guessing the heat's compacted it so its taken longer to fill, because when I put into the compost last night at about 11pm, by fuck did it emanate a stench. A stench so hearty and thick that it quickly filled the garden then the house, right through to the front room where my partner's nose quickly caught scent, despite all my best efforts to quickly shut windows. Cue resentful glare.

She's got tomorrow off, and I know she's going to make a point of doing some gardening as I've been giving her shit for not (it's been a bit of an on-going saga between the two of us recently - I do at least a half hour in the fucking thing every day, when it's she that wanted a garden in the first place, with no historical experience of how much effort it can take) - this means I'm going to have to get out there at 11pm tonight and somehow work out how to de-stenchify it, otherwise I'm in shit tomorrow.

    As always.

    • each time you chuck in veg waste, add some fresh rosemary or whatever nice herbs you have int garden on top. Save used lemons for same.Fax_Benson
    • Maggots / flies don't like thyme, apparently.Fax_Benson

    • Can't put lemon in the compost, unfortunately - a shame me for me, because I use a fuckload of lemons each week..detritus

    • Also pee on it. For no other reason than I imagine that's what old men on allotments do.shapesalad
    • why no lemons?monospaced
    • Because they promote blue mould, which tends to fuck everything up. I might be wrong in that, but its .. fuckit *Googles*detritus

I'd prefer not to as I have horror thoughts about blue mould.

    • "Maggots / flies don't like thyme, apparently." Is that because they only live for a couple of days?

    • Aren't you supposed to layer compost with lime to keep it smelling ok?shapesalad
    • lime would change the ph, so I'd be wary of doing ath by default. Thusfar I've just used layers of soil to dampen stench.detritus
    • My trouble now is that there's very little available open/spare soil as it's all covered in plants, the selfish fuckers.detritus
    • My grandfather and mother when they had allotments and made compost both used lime. It's the done thing. You want acidic soil?shapesalad
