UPDATE:
Well, after buying a new turntable I finally figured out that the problem was actually my speakers!
The pair of Bose computer speakers I was running were faulty and the volume would fluctuate uncontrollably. I looked it up and other people had the same problem, and it looks like there's nothing I can do about it. I hadn't thought to check them because they had worked fine for years.
Kinda weird that they coincidentally crapped out a few months after I moved them from my computer desk to my turntable, but whatever.
But the good news here is that I've upgraded to the U-Turn Orbit and it's pretty rad, or at least it looks rad.
I'm not certain there is a noticeable audio quality upgrade from my old TT, but I'm currently running the stock cartridge so I didn't expect anything crazy.
Changing the speed from 33rpm to 45 is quick and easy. I got the hang of it on my first or second try.
I'm currently playing music through an old, cheap pair of Sony computer speakers (in the picture above) that I got at a thrift store for $1. It works, but sounds way worse than my old Bose speakers.
Next upgrade on the list is a nice pair of active speakers... when I can get away with it.
- get on classifieds, find an old pair of floorstanding or decent bookshelf speakers and order a class t/ class d amp from china. <$100 and you're sorted.kingsteven
- Yeah floorstanding speakers and a full stereo rig is the long term plan. But right now I've got this thing in my bedroom and space is tight.nocomply
- Everything needs to be high up on my dresser or else my kids will destroy it.nocomply
- What about some wee Genelec speakers/monitors. For the size they fucking kick ass and sound so precise!microkorg
