    Right.

So, for the first in my, I've finally tried Chicago-style deep-dish 'pizza'.

Followed a recipe to the letter, dough and all (definitely one of the more novel uses I've put my workhorse 32cm Le Creuset frying pan through), and it came out as promised by the purveyor of the recipe (Chef John from Food Wishes).

Frankly, it's a 32cm pan-load of heavy meh. I'm not quite sure what the big deal is, here.

    Also, it's *definitely not* pizza.

    • It's funny - in Italy, at least in the East, 'Pizza' is often served at the dinner table, and instead of what I expect - it's a big lump of focaccia-like bread.detritus
    • it might have salt or seasoning or some sort of light spread of flavour on it, but there's no mass of tomato paste, cheese and topping. I don't really get it.detritus
    • American pizza ≠ Italian pizzai_monk
    • Now I feel like I ate a brick, and need to sleep it off, after just one slice. Jesus Christ.Continuity

    • Although Detroit Pizza is phenomenal. Descendants in Toronto is fucking amazing._niko
    • "Italians created American pizza" yeah to satisfy americans. Same as the Chinese "americanise" their dishes. They dont eat that shit themselves!microkorg
    • Not entirely true, micro. Pizza neopolitan isn't that far off from a traditional NYC pizza, which is what it started as.monospaced
    • I understand there is much of America that has shit pizza, but in NYC at least, we have authentic everything ... even Chinese.monospaced
    • You don't think that NYC invented Pizza, and then Napoli took up the recipe, do you?detritus
    • obviously notmonospaced
    • I'm saying that dudes from Napoli who came to the USA made pizza in their style, which eventually became NYC style pizza.monospaced
    • Right, ok! Sorry. When I was younger I actually thought Pizza, Hot Dogs and Hamburgers were all US-invented. Never judge by your own standards! :)detritus
    • I'm curious. Does the UK have good pizza? If so, what style is it in, and what makes it good or better than "americanized"?monospaced
    • We have some good pizza now - in the Italian style. Whether it's better or not is a matter of preference. I doubt I could eat better than Napolitan. Or NYC..!detritus
    • I'd love to try an authentic Chicago deep pan, but it's hard to beat well-made street pizza from anywhere off the main tourist roads in any Italian town/citydetritus
    • All that said, there's some damn good pizza out here.sea_sea
    • California has great pizza, especially since the New Yorkers moved there and made a point to get it right.monospaced
    • Good here as well. If you're ever in Seattle hit up Big Mario's, it's legit.garbage
    • sad .. so many people think all we have is Domino's and Pizza Hut. couldn't be farther from the truthmonospaced
    • New York style is still my favorite. Yum.sea_sea
