Hi friends. Coming here for a little vinyl advice...

I used to collect 10-15 years ago and play my stuff on a cheap all-in-1 unit when I didn't know any better.

Took a long hiatus but for better or for worse (and I really can't decide here) I'm back with a vengeance and a rapidly emptying wallet.

I currently have a still-kinda-cheap turntable: Sony ps-lx200h. I bought it used from the owner of my local record store for $50.

It's served me pretty well for a few months, but lately the volume when I play records keeps cutting in and out. It's like normal volume for a while, then cuts down to like 50% volume, or maybe less. Then mysteriously goes back to normal.

I don't think it's the stylus because I've checked it and cleaned it multiple times.

I also don't think it's the cables because I've checked those.

I think the internal pre-amp is fizzling out. Is that a thing that can happen? Unfortunately I can't test for it because I don't have an external pre-amp to run it through.

Regardless, Father's Day is coming up and that'll make a good excuse to upgrade. I've had my eyes on the U-turn Orbit, which I've seen discussed a bit on here.

    • is there maybe a switch that cuts out the output when the tone arm is resting?kingsteven
    • or is it cutting out on just one side? if the preamp was shitting it entirely it would sound like the bass had been cut out rather than a dip in levelkingsteven
    • I went the route of integrated amp to avoid pre amp fizz. Marantz has several price points. Another option to consider.DRIFTMONKEY
    • those auto turntables are packed full of switches and all sorts of magic that can go wrong... what's the point in reseting if it cant flip the record over too?kingsteven
    • The sound cuts out across both speakers. It's weird. I think my turntable is just old and cheap. Totally agree with the automatic crap that can go wrong.nocomply
    • That's my I'm attracted to that super-minimal U-turn one and others that are similar. Less stuff that can break.nocomply
    • not positive, but I think the U-Turn and similar models that are super minimal, are more difficult to switch between 33 and 45. No switch. Keep that in mind.DRIFTMONKEY
    • No switch, but the belt is easily accessible and it looks pretty easy to do: https://uturnaudio.c…nocomply
    • ^ yeah the u-turn is much easier to switch than the pro-ject. got sick of that pretty quickly on mine and bought the external speed switching box.kingsteven
