    I think JG purposely worded his letter asking Lee for help in a way that wouldn't implicate Lee directly in it — in order to make sure Lee can deal graciously with the case and not only not lose his face in the process, but possibly get some good publicity for the movie and himself in the way.

    I think it was a considerate gesture of JG who had all the right to just go "Yo Spike, you're using my work, happens to be stolen and somehow has your name on it. Give me my money."

    Spike Lee didn't quite get that he was actually being offered an easy way out, not a problem that wasn't his.
