I've known a few masons (that I knew were such). They all seem like real stand-up, community-minded sort of people. As I undertand it, the reason to become a Mason and go through the rites is as a means of spiritual/moral self improvement, not some kind of networking/secret handshake/good-ole boys club (which is frowned upon). They've got a lot of symbolism and rites and what-not, but it's all intended to teach moral lessons, some of which might require a solid foundation in moralistic thinking to 'get' the lesson, hence the 'degrees' ... That's the propaganda anyways.
