Even if MS bought Opera or apply anything else than trident engine, that wouldn't be end of problems. IE8 is on horizon, IE7 was released in 2006 and we have to struggle with IE6, because 19.6% of idiots didn't make an upgrade.
Meanwhile Opera has 2.4% of market, despite its long presence but Chrome has 3.6% of the market and I think that this is the sign for Opera that some actions need to be taken, otherwise Opera will disappear faster than IE6 or IE7.
