  I have the feeling that the slowness is due to your Illustrator file. Are you placing a huge PSD in there? I do that sometimes to see what I'm doing. Maybe you should put a low res jpeg of your PSD in there and see if that speeds up the situation.

  Illustrator has not been optimized well for OS X yet. That could also be a factor.
