  another option:

  1) draw a box
  2) fill with linear gradient
  3) object>expand (255 levels ought to do well)
  4) drag to brushes palette and create 'art brush'
  5) apply brush to a circle and adjust stroke with until it all matches up.
  6) clipping-mask as necessary
