  pretty much, the workstation cards are heavily optimized for openGL
  (as opposed to direct X like gaming cards). they support more discrete viewports and hardwear overlays, and they're certified by their manufacturers to provide a higher degree of stability /reliability (usually buy stepping down the click speed a bit)

  but these are all tweeks at the software end, hardware is virtually identical.
