With the demise of dedicated 2D cards like Matrox, which graphic card would at the moment be the best bet for a designer (ranging from web, print, 3d, animation)?

drill it down yourself, i don't know your budget or needs ie pci, pci express, agp, etc

i can find graphic card listings, but not suggestions from peers who have experiences with them.
PCI Express
Budget $350,-needed for: photoshop, illustrator, flash, after effects, director, 3dmax, Indesign
Dual screen functionality (dvi)

Ive always been partial to Raedon/ATI products. never a problem

Nairn'll tell you. He's real Nazi when it comes to these things...

just make sure it a top of the line one, like PCI express x16

Graphic Card Nazi... that sounds like a solid recommendation.

i think i'm rocking one of these badboys right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr…
it's running great. definitely noticed a difference in image processing speed from just using applications and surfing the web to actually working with images and motion.

"badboys"
did i really just say that about a graphics card?

As I said to moth, choosing which GPU to buy these days is as much to do with how much you are willing to shell out than anything else.
I can't speak for 3D content generation, as I don't know too much about that, but these days, productivity in most creative production tasks is principally dependent on your CPU and system RAM - there's so little between GPUs in terms of 2d performance, it's not worth thinking about, so comparisons to oldskool Millennium cards are, essentially, worthless.
From my perception, ATi appear more aimed at workers, whilst nVidia are towards 3d and gamers. This is probably more marketing than anything.
I've always run ATi (Currently an aging Radeon 9800), but if I was to buy another card now, I'd be tempted to consider the model Enjine suggested, as I've seen a number of positive reviews (not necessarily that brand, but the 7950GT/X generally).
If you're into a bit of everything - 2D, 3D & games, make sure you've got a MINIMUM of 256mb, preferably more if you're not wanting to upgrade for a while and wish to continue playing the latest games.
You probably know all the above anyway - I'm no GPU fascist, except where bloody onboard Intel GPUs are concerned (moth)!
nb. If you're a high-ender, you may wish to hold off for a while, as they've just announced PCIe x2, or something, which will require a new motherboard, which means you may as well wait 'til quad/octo core processors come out, which means you'll not get a new PC for 8 months, which means you won't be able to play any new games, which means your interest in geekery'n'games will dwindle.
which is where I'm at now. :(

Nairn: so basically it doesn't matter if I would go for a nVidia GForce 7800 GT or an ATi 1650 CF or whatever just taking 2D performance as deciding factor?
Only their 3D gaming performance will differ?
- Nairn0
Essentially, yeah :)

lol
is there a particular brand which is crap when it comes to drivers? I remember my trust old Diamond Pro videocard sucked serious dick when it came to display drivers

but Kelpie, Friday night's my regular WoW and D&D night, where I call up my buddies, and we all meet at someone's house with our gaming rigs and get hyper on Jaffa cakes, tartrazine and fructose syrup-heavy cordial.
why outside? answer me that? what does it have to offer me, except pain, angst and social ridicule?
