3d apps usually 'officially' support professional grade cards (like nVidia quadro or ATI Fire GL) consumer level gaming cards will work 99% of the time but won't have access to some of the openGL acceleration in the viewports. They're actually the same hardware for both cards, just different bios and drivers.
I think the general feeling out there is that ATI has been neglecting their drivers when it comes to the workstation market. nVidia would be my choice.
