wouldn't it be easier to just put the layer on top?
here's a method:
ctrl-click to select the transparency of the layer you want to punch out. select the top layer which is blending over the ones below, and click the mask button to apply a mask to that blending layer.. ctrl+i to flip the mask and you should be good to go.
