i was in your shoes not more than 2 months ago. the d70 is solid and the lens kit it comes with is much better than canon's cheap piece of shit lens.
However, the canon is 8.1 mp to nikon's 6.1 mp (that matters to some) but it is also a few hundred dollars more so...
and the canon is much faster as far as fps (5) compared to nikons 2.5). and canon says it can take a sequence of up to 27 shots (but i have pulled 70 consecutive shots in a row)both are really fast as far as focus time. the canon has 9 points and the nikon uses a matrix (i'm not that familiar with it so i can't really say much to that point)
in the end i went for the canon 20d. i got it without the crappy lens and bought a tamrac 18-200 for another $450. all in all it was just under $2k and totally worth it.
a lot of people would say the lens i bought is shit glass and blah blah blah. i'm not a pro photographer so i guess i don't have the 'eye' to notice the extreme details, but the lens with the camera is the shit! it took me 2 damn years to actually fork out the money for a digi that i thought would be worth it. so far so good.
