    I miraculously received an assignment.
    WordPress website.
Mockup in less than a week.

I prepared the basics and installed GeneratePress Premium.

Then when I was starting with Elementor I thought maybe I don't need this to make a simple website.

    So I checked Generate Blocks.
After half hour of trying it, I really felt unmotivated and didn't come as far as I wished.

It seems when using it a page will load only one HTML file among other really good performance enhancements.

    But Gutenberg? Oh man...

Is anyone using it or recommends it?

    • Gutenberg? Using it, but not used to it... hate it. Just finished a pair of projects with (client wanted that editor), and I think I'm not going to use it againOBBTKN
    • ...unless the client pays a fortune ;)OBBTKN
    • right now with difficulties to make the theme sidebar start after the hero section/block. please don't tell me I have to choose no sidebars and then make oneoey_oey
    • I recently built a 'huge' site of which the editor is nothing but custom Blocks. The site looks hideous now that they're editing themselves - else I'd share. <3PonyBoy
    • To be clear: I hate Gutenberg but it's what the lead on the project requested.PonyBoy

Somehow I can't find clear information on this:

I made a custom single post template for the blog posts from a client's website with Elementor.

I used the Elementor Canvas layout but the primary menu is still showing.

    In Elementor's website:

"Note: Only posts that use the Default Template will have the Single Post Template applied to them, even if they otherwise meet the Display Conditions criteria. Posts that use Canvas or Full Width template (or any template other than Default) will not have the Single Post Template applied to them."

    Is that the case?

I know I can remove the menu with CSS but I just want to know if I'm missing something here.

    Thanks in advance!

    • When you say "I made a custom single post template" did you create it ?Salarrue
    • ... using the template editor?Salarrue
    • Verify the post template rules.

The post itself should have default template assigned.
      Salarrue
    • Or, you need to create a custom menu template with a specific rule not to show on postsSalarrue
    • Hi, sorry I was having dinner. Well I used the template editor yes.oey_oey
    • I have a custom header with menu for all pages. the menu showing is the default theme menu.oey_oey
    • If I uncheck primary menu then a menu with all pages is shown. what is normal.oey_oey
    • maybe it's the template rules. I have a custom single post template for portfolio items and there it doesn't show that specific menu.oey_oey
    • the rules are obviously different and I'm gonna try first change rules and then dupiicate the single portfolio template and apply to posts and change rulesoey_oey
    • this issue wasn't happening before. no idea what happened.oey_oey
    • forget it, I tried several rules and as long it's a post (no matter what category) the primary menu shows. okay CSS.oey_oey
    • just using .main-navigation { display: none;} for now.oey_oey
    • has it selected the wrong template from the edit page in wordpress, not the elementor editor? I have this problem after duplicating an elementor page with yoastimbecile

    QUESTION:

Is there a plugin/service that provides a way to have a Twitter account feeding into a WP site... but not as a Twitter feed insert... but rather where every new tweet gets converted to a new post?

So you post to Twitter and it gets checked out by the WP site (once hourly?) and if a new post(s) exists it automatically converts and published the tweet to the site as a WP post?

I am getting a weird error where some PDF files available from the media gallery are not accessible directly if I paste the full url in a post or directly in the browser address bar... I am not finding info about this anywhere. If someone is interested to help me out i'll pay for your time.

    Thanks

    • do you have some WP-specific redirect stuff going on in your .htaccess file(s)? Like, for making your URLs neater, etc?Nairn

I have a client for whom I've made Wordpress site using using domain (domain a) which consists of client's name

Client purchased a new domain (domain b) that is the name of their business and ask me to redirect second domain to first.

A couple of days ago client asked to upgrade the web hosting to have more disk space.

    So far so good.

The next day when i typed domain a in the URL it showed the hosting address!

I typed domain b and the same happened.

To make things worse, as I couldn't install Let's Encrypt in the hosting address but only in individual domains it shows that the address is risky.

I wrote to the hosting company to ask what had happened and they wrote back:

"Your WordPress installation is displayed under the hosting address because both domains point to the same folder (httpdocs). As a result, both are linked to the WordPress installation. To fix the problem now, you would have to reinstall the Wordpress and before that assign both domains to their own folder. If you install an SSL certificate at the hosting domain, the certificate error should no longer occur."

My question is how to I assign both domains to their own folder?

Do i create a folder with the name of the domain for each domain in the root?

Aargh! This was not happening before!!!

    • you can't point 2 domain names to the same location. You point one and the other will just redirect the that one.dbloc
    • I really can't understand why it was working and suddenly it's an issue.oey_oey
    • Who is the domain registrar. They should be able to help you get it set up correctly.dbloc
    • yes I know that they will redirect. it's supposed too. or am I missing something?oey_oey
    • the domain registrar just wrote that. I thought they would just repair it in the sense of making it the way it was before.oey_oey
    • but I'm half way there already. I found out that domain b was not redirecting anymore but was showing as a different website.oey_oey
    • please don't ask me how that happened, I didn't change a thing except for the upgrade.oey_oey
    • main domain (a) is working again properly and domain b redirects to a but I have a small error notice in plesk.oey_oey
    • sounds like you got it all fixed up.dbloc
    • i create a folder for domain b and updated Wordpress in domain a. then I change the folder for domain b and instead of web-hosting i changed it to redirect.oey_oey
    • I thought i was lost here. still don't eget what happened and I cant delete the error notice. it keeps popping up despite I delete the folder I created.oey_oey
    • but it works, thanks!oey_oey
    • I guess I was spoiled by DreamHost. Support is simply awesome. They tell what's going on and why and repair it.oey_oey
    • You can point as many domains as you want into the same location. These things depend on the server configuration and dns settings.sted

here's something i've not come across before
    go to
    https://madeleinemilburn.co.uk/
and look at the images spilling out everywhere. now resize the browser window slightly... they spring back into place!
    wtf is going on?

    • resize event has a js what adds max-height to the images, and modifies the height of the article container.sted
    • same event should be called on doc load.sted
    • ok, but it never used to happen and afaik nothing has changed. weirdhans_glib
    • and there is a max-eight in the code, but the browser is ignoring it as it is in % whereas if is specify px it behaves. makes no sense to mehans_glib
    • there is a JS error on load in the page-scroll-to-id.mi... file that kills the other Jquery functions until you resize the page and run the onchange functionspot13
    • cheers for that, very helpful. tho why this has just become an issue is very odd.hans_glib
    • you probably have a plugin (or theme) that was recently updated - try just turning them off one at a time (or toggle themes) to track down the issuespot13

is there a decent light weight alt to WP these days?

ive never used 5.x until now and holy shit i hate it

    • Craft was always the better option. https://craftcms.com…grafician
    • not to mention any flat file cms out there, Kirby is awesome: https://getkirby.com…grafician
    • not to mention Twill from Area17 based on Laravel https://twill.io/grafician
    • Idk any major agency using WP for clients websites.grafician
    • also if you run a blog/subscriptions Ghost is the only best option: https://ghost.org/grafician
    • for anything else, you have Webflow https://webflow.com/… but it's pricey per year for the CMS+hostinggrafician
    • ^BUT webflow will crush WP in a few years, it's basically InDesign/Photoshop for web +ecommerce + CMS + hosting in the same packagegrafician
    • concrete5ESKEMA
    • ^lol nobody wants to have in their folio a website build with concrete 5, that's for corner shop websites...grafician
    • But yes, there are a lot of headless cms systems, Jekyll, etc. but you need to be a full stack dev to handle those, or to have a 10 man dev team to handle thosegrafician
    • we're in the "action script phase" of cms systems, where you need to be past a front-end/designer to handle anythinggrafician
    • I'm a designer who can code, but anything past what I mentioned above needs a dev team to handle a project...grafician
    • btw there's still lots of cash in WP projects, decent ones can earn you 50-100K...but WP is very high upkeep/securitygrafician
    • I'd rather use Webflow these days for small-mid projects, WP is too expensive for a free option...grafician
    • also ppl/clients that go "why can't you use a $49 theme to do this project" are fucking idiots lol stay away from thosegrafician
    • just download the classic editor plugin and voila, it's Wordpress pre 5.0fadein11
    • with all the benefitsfadein11
    • "concrete5, that's for corner shop websites" lol. You sure have all the knowledge. What makes you say that? Your ignorance? I use concrete5 since 2008.ESKEMA

Having a Wordpress site built for me at the moment...I've used a couple of different developers offshore to do it.

Just noticed today, theres 50+ installations of a plugin "CMSmap - WordPress Shell".

I've asked the developers and they don't know what these are.

Anyone know? Hacked? If I just remove these plugins, is there something else I would need to do?

There's no customer data or anything like that in the database at thos stage.

    • You should instal Wordfence to add a firewall, and also to scan for possible js injections.Salarrue
    • Ideally when working with offshore freelancers set-up a staging version of the site and ask them to add the code to child themes or custom extensionsSalarrue

    • If you see "WP" and "shell" in the same sentence, it's malware.grafician

    • Headless shopify at that, and Kirby for anything publishing https://getkirby.com…grafician
    • also if you manage WP, rename tf wp-login.php on the server, then un-name it when you need to logingrafician

    • oh and check tf your DB too, the malware is in there too, you need to reinstall fresh everything after you get ownedgrafician

plugin recommendation please... looking for similar to store locator type plugin.

Posts/pages will be added, and they each need to be able to add/have their location / address

then need to be able to search these based on proximity etc.. have found a few that look like may do this but looking for recommends.

    Much love

That that pagespeed stuff with a grain of salt.

You can get poor scores on those tests and still have a really fast site.

In the end, what really matters is how long your site takes to load.

There's a lot of low-hanging fruit you can probably grab, but after that for most cases you quickly reach a point of diminishing returns.

Your web host has A LOT to do with your site speed. With a good host, you can skip a lot of the optimization stuff and still be fine.

For WordPress sites my favorite caching/performance optimization plugin is https://wp-rocket.me/. It's not free, but it's easy to use, very well supported, and works great.

Use that in conjunction with an image optimization plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp… and you should be pretty good.

That's what I do for all the sites that I manage.

    • Yeah, I concur. It's mostly uneducated clients simply running speed test independently and getting lacklustre results; not knowing what they mean...ideaist

I had some Wordpress / woocommerce work done by a contractor for a client in 2015. Didn’t end up getting implemented...but I have a new client who may be interested in what was built.

I know bugger all about WP so just wondering how to load the old work? I have all the working files.

Would I install Wordpress and then upload the old files on top? Or will that break things?

Can I only use the theme that was created?

    Any advice appreciated.

    • themes in the wp-content/theme folder, plugins into the plugins folder for the start... you should have a database and file backup if you want a full restoreapi
    • and you might need to keep the new wp-config.php file instead of the old (where db password is stored)

Anyone experienced in selling music online?
A friend of mine would like a simple WP website where some snippets of songs could be played and you can click to buy the album.
    Which plugin would you recommend?
    No soundcloud.

    • Bandcamp page, then Bandcamp embeds on website, although website may not be needed at all unless he needs other features.fadein11
    • If you don't want to use an external service at all then just use Woocommerce, it can handle digital downloadsfadein11
    • He actually has a website that I've made but html, css and js only. His wish is to have a Wordpress instead so he can manage content.oey
    • I asked him about Soundcloud and Bandcamp and he said he already has that but for other things and he wants to have it on the website only.oey
    • ah ok, in that case just upload clips of tracks to website and then use Woofadein11
    • for downloads/payment. There are other premium plugins but Woo is free. You will need a Paypal or Stripe account to take payments.fadein11
    • Why not use a service like MusicBed, they have a built in audience.ArmandoEstrada

I use the bootstrap framework to design my layouts in WP. I feel like I have more control but I also feel like I'm 'waisting' time when I could be learning how to use a page builder plugin instead.

Which do you think is better? Bootstrap or a page builder? Which page builder plugin do you recommend I should learn?

    Thanks in advance

    • Beaverbuilder is well put together. Visual composer is the most popular. Either way , your understanding of bootstrap will help learn them much faster.T-Dawg
    • I find when clients come back with modifications it's much faster to make changes on bootstrap templates. But try one out (both come with free versions I think)T-Dawg
    • thanks t-dawg. Have you found they have limitations or no?hotroddy
    • They're pretty expansive with what you can do. I work in both code and page builders, depending on the project. Best way to see if it's for you is to try oneT-Dawg
    • There are some page builders out there that I've had to work with that are abhorrent. The two mentioned above are my favorites.T-Dawg
    • I suggest just poking around in the free versions of each for 10 mins. I think you'll get a better idea to whether they'll suit your needs.T-Dawg
    • thanks for the sound advice!hotroddy
    • learn the pagebuilder whats closes to bootstrap, ways easier to understand the layout management and develop into that. (i used visual composer back then)sted
    • Thanks Sted. Found a BootStrap PB. Their tag line is, "The main goal is to give you wings, without glueing them to you." Love ithotroddy

So any thoughts on the new editing system they are launching, Gutenberg?

    https://deliciousbrains.com/word…

This is a huge change when you consider that one third of all sites by some estimates are based on WordPress, and this change is not backwards compatible (!).

I suppose it's potentially a huge money maker for WordPress developers, because you can now go to every client and tell them you will make their site compatible with this new system...

    • It sounds like a pain in the ass. They don't seem to be using common sense in rollout. It should only be enabled by default in new installs rather than on alldee-dubs
    • I think most people will instal the Classic Editor plugin as a band aid approach to not break existing sites rather than rebuilding to accommodate Gutenberg.dee-dubs
    • It's worth noting that the plugin version is getting very negative reviews from users. This could be a major turning point for WP in terms of how they decide toyuekit
    • roll this out...

Foundation is the responsive grid. You do things in rows and create columns.

So your mark up will look like:
    <div class="row">
    <div class= small-12 columns>
    YOUR CONETENT
    </div>
    </div>

So anything you throw inside there will respond according to your column width setting.

Check the grid examples here. And Block Grids are fucking awesome. I cant believe Bootstrap doesn't have something like this natively.
