capitalism is dying and merging with new democracy/socialism

One thing I noticed is an increase in clients that want a lot more control over the design process than before.
- That's the sound of your soul dying, not of design dying, though.Continuity
- yes, and this is a result of the easy-to-reach design tools and cheap offerings out there with quick turnarounds, it's so annoyingmonospaced
- Client management / education is another important skill you have to learn.Chimp

A vast majority of my clients are now asking for "theme like designs" that are customized not to look exactly like the $40- theme that they just purchased...but they don't want to spend a lot of money on a unique custom experience and design. Fuck it...the client is always right!

Wait your just as guilty... tsk tsk. Thats like bernie sanders callng for $15 minimum wage but wanting college graduates to be interns and paying them only $12. "Those who have virtue always in their mouths, and neglect it in practice, are like a harp, which emits a sound pleasing to others, while itself is insensible of the music."

'The rise of all this mediocre design does not signal the end of the design, it just obscures it.'
Going to have to respectfully disagree here, my man.
Mediocre design coming out of whatever website Benfal is referring to only serves to highlight good design, and its inherent value.
Yes, there will always the shit little businesses trying to get something for nothing ... and getting what they pay for.
On the other hand, no real self-respecting brand or company would put their projects in the hands of these types of designers, and will actively seek out the pros with the eye, judgement and craft to pull the job off, and they will still pay good money for it.
- There are some bad designers who charge a lot and convince companies with money to hire them.bainbridge
- I worded it wrong. We are actually in complete agreement. I was saying design is alive and well. Just behind a pile of shit cheap design options.monospaced
- Ah right, got it!Continuity

I blame the downfall of design on Helvetica.
It's standardized sameness and made designers lazy.
- < yeah. there. I said it!robotron3k
- so it started falling in the 60s?monospaced
- 2edgy4metrue_cut
- they started giving it away in the late 40s I believe, $50 for the whole set. that also made it super pedestrian.robotron3k
- $50 in 1940 could probably buy you a car or 10 minutes of necking with Betty Grable.CyBrainX
- like qbn here.etero

Everything needs design. There's no shortage. You just got to find applications for it.
I hear you on the "everyones's a designer", though.
But you're better than that, and them.

There's so many uneducated hacks out there who are working at sign shops and designing ugly menus and signs for restaurants.
At least Squarespace and Canva look good and are hard to mess up.
- Yeah these are good services, Squarespace is super well done and effective. Canva put our quality work.Bennn
- Its just sad to see how the graphic design evolved into those automated thing for a large chunk of the offering.Bennn
- I don't think either service's success has all been 'lost' by actual designers. There are just many more things that look good.MrT

Apart from graphic design, there are a lot works are dying. Like interpreter which might be soon replaced by AI tech.....
- Life moves on. Things change. Such is the nature of reality...set
- I dont think so, context is crucial. People who need interpreters or translators will still value them as always, this tech only means that common folk canMiguex
- have access to basic translation services, but it's no replacement for the real thing.Miguex
- That might be true right now but of course technology will replace that one day...set

Does this mean I can go home now?

Use your skills for something global and change the human consciousness. Sheep will follow sheep they don't know better. Do something that expands you to the next level..you recognize the need

Another "service" has emerged on Facebook. "Lightboard" which promises to be a "turnkey" solution for all your graphic needs. Woohoo. I swear every profession out there is going to be commoditized and turned into some vc funded scheme.

You can also spend $5 on a hooker, won't be the same as the $3000 one
- problem is young designer that have talent will work 10-20 hours on a 5$ logo because they're just starting. devaluating the profession.Bennn
- We all did it. We disrupted other people. We're just old enough now to feel the effect on the other side.ETM
- We all did it. We spent $5 on a hooker, realizing we need a $3000 one.jagara

The value of Graphic design, at whatever quality, is driven by its market, NOT the hopes of graphic designers.
Much like restaurant food, the customer (client) who is satisfied by a £5.00 burger meal is unlikely to value the nuances and craft of an a-la-cart menu from a Michelin starred chef. And, neither restaurant or any of those in between are likely to fail because of the others product.
A $5 logo has a place in the market. But, It's likely to be exploiting cheap labour from developing countries or, more likely, end up costing a lot more, hence 'from $5'.
We will never be able to sell a £50k identity project to a person that cannot see the value in it. So, if you are threatened by someone selling a logo for $5 then I don't think you truly understand the service you are providing or the markets you operate in.
