i’m losing it thinking about graphic designers being asked to design apologies but keep it “on brand”

Everything is going to die. First we have conglomerates buying up or making one forumla and repeating (Corepower, Spa Envy, etc., everywhere, paying pennies to their staff but have a massive marketing campaign and cheaper prices), next we'll have AI that simply eliminates professions that require skill.

Better save your pennies! The only way to survive is to have enough wealth to live off others that don't (income properties, etc.).

    Is it dead yet?

    • still dying. it's a long process. a long long long death.Krassy

Let's be honest, we all hate stupid small assignments. Canva, squarespace, wix and even fucking godaddy have a specific product for that specific clients. I reckon that this a good opportunity for real designers to create projects like this : http://makingpolicypublic.net/in…

    • we are required and have the tools to deploy small projects from our own workflow without 3rd party service providers.sted
    • I just finished laughing with a client on how we're going to make a simple gallery page for his restaurant interesting. It's a micro project, with simple ideassted
    • For me it isn't just interesting because it's easy and original, but he can't get it from these instant services. that's how i think about this competition.sted
    • And more time consulting, less time moving items in illustrator...Salarrue
    • I love those services, it's an easy way to get rid of bottom feeders.zarkonite

''Im gonna show you how anybody can be a graphic designer in about 10 minutes"

    HAHAHAHA ...

    Took me 9 years+

If you dont what Canva is, take a look. Their templates looks great. I'm pretty sure there's people stating they are graphic designer and have businesses who runs on Canva templates and they dont tell anybody.

  • omahadesigns0

There's so many uneducated hacks out there who are working at sign shops and designing ugly menus and signs for restaurants.

At least Squarespace and Canva look good and are hard to mess up.

    • Yeah these are good services, Squarespace is super well done and effective. Canva put our quality work.Bennn
    • Its just sad to see how the graphic design evolved into those automated thing for a large chunk of the offering.Bennn
    • I don't think either service's success has all been 'lost' by actual designers. There are just many more things that look good.MrT

Squarespace, the website to make websites...

Squarespace worth 1,700,000,000$ ... in 2017, it's probably way more now.

Millions of websites that Web designers will never design...

    • I get tons of Squarespace design gigs. Lower cost than from-scratch sites, but disproportionately less work for me too.e-wo
  • Bennn0

The woman who created Canva sits on a campany that now worth 3,200,000,000$

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/ale…

Her idea was to simplify graphic design...

They now offers services to big brands and enterprises, so we graphic designers, will lose jobs from McDonald, JP Morgan and 100 other big company.

Users have made 2 billion designs in Canva to date, one billion in the past year alone.... Thats a lot of jobs taken from graphic designers.

    • good for her, making money out of what is essentially clip art. i don't want to work for clients who think that is graphic design.hans_glib
    • It looks good, thats what matter to many clients. Canva stuff looks good, thats why it work so well.Bennn
    • At least they offer design not architecture plans to "empower people to build houses"...grafician
    • soonBennn
    • +1 hans. Did those customers ever consider hiring a designer, or were they the ‘I can do this, I’ve got Word and some fonts’ crowd?MrT
    • This will eliminate the bottom dwellers. Also I used Canva couple of times for tight deadlines and preliminary samples.Beeswax
    • well, MrT, Canva now works with majors brands like McDonald ... soBennn
    • Canva is to design what Big Macs are to food : ]MrT
    • Pretty slick app but at the end of the day it's really just a bunch of templates isn't it?yuekit
    • You have to keep in mind that the market for "graphic design" has expanded exponentially and will continue to expand.yuekit
    • ^ yepMrT
    • Pretty much the opposite of the thread title in other words. People who never would have needed a logo or poster will want one, and turn to services like this.yuekit
    • thank you templatemonstersted
    • https://www.canva.co…wagshaft
    • Yeah, Just like wix killed the web design business lol_niko
    • And really it’s no different than any of the other crap that’s out there, some of it’s pretty good even but it creates a boring overused aesthetic._niko
    • Never heard of it. Seems the whole world is going to be a template.NBQ00
    • A lot of their templates looks very solid actually.Bennn
    • Bennnnnn! the secret's out in every industry. There is perfect balance, typographical choices, composition, colour etc, when there is enough of it out there_niko
    • you start coming to a consensus of what is aesthetically perfect. We can do it via crowdsourcing like canva or AI but we end up at the same result._niko
    • It's been happening with pop music for years. They've discovered the catchiest melodies, the perfect pitch, the catchiest lyrics etc. it all sounds great but_niko
    • at the same time it's all shit. Monotonous, disposable shit. Same with the stuff on Canva. As a designer it's your job to rise above it and do something differe_niko
    • I know niko. But the clients often doesnt care or have the knowledge, they actually WANT something they've seen many times.. lolBennn
    • Templates and casts are common place in the ceiling coving industry and it hasn't done them any harm.shapesalad
    • right benn, and for those clients, grab a template mark it up 10x and call it a day :)_niko
    • All this means is that designers need to expand beyond churning out sites that can be better made by a template ffs.monospaced
    • Also, just because a few big companies use them it doesn't mean they use them for EVERYTHING.monospaced
    • Most big companies use various agencies for various marketing campaigns and initiatives and products. Canva probably just for small shit.monospaced
    • Canva doesn't actually take agency work away. It might just take work away from the lowest rung of design, like an entry level junior would be assigned.monospaced
    • What hans said pretty much sums up my feelings. If you have a client who'd rather use Canva themselves than use your services, they're probably the type of...ben_
    • client who'd be over your shoulder asking you to make bad decisions as it is.ben_
    • in-house it makes some design projects much easier. Like all the requests my team gets to make invites and post cards from HR.ben_
    • Their logo is shit.MrT

    "The End of Professional Photography?"

    article: https://medium.com/@robert.rittm…
    and: https://www.thephoblographer.com…
    - -

Now read this and apply it to Graphic Design:

"The article centers around the fact that all things in the technology world start out strong with early adopters going on to make huge sums of money,
followed by the masses who buy the same technology as they want a piece of the pie, which then leads to the early adopters offering to teach the newbies everything they know for a chunk of change, and then the industry dies due to overcrowding.
The author likens the world of professional photography to desktop publishing and web development, both of which apparently suffered this fate.
In fact he says that once people begin to offer services that will help teach others, it’s game over."

I'm not saying he's right, but it's true that graphic design and photography are not only for real professionals anymore, lots of persons jump in the boat and improvise themselves as pros, and this is devaluating the profession

    • There's probably a larger market for professional photography(and video) now than every before. Sometimes increasing supply increases demand as well.monNom
    • Just look at Instagram, it's insatiable.monNom
    • lots of enthusiats and good amateurs on Instagram, dunno how many real prosBennn
    • Nah if it just means tons of all-the-gear-no-idea dingbats doing gash work, leaving decent designers to fix it all, bring it on.MrT
    • * I claim no decency.MrT
    • ... the same arguments were being made when Kodak came out with roll film. No one predicted the rise of photo-journalism, it will go on you just have to trustzarkonite
    • the creativity of artists. The masses just follow trends and then quit out of boredom.zarkonite
    • Well, it's kinda hard to say you're a pro with 1 year experience or less...grafician

"Love this website builder. ❤️I was managed to create a simple landing page within 20-25 minutes. Normally that process took me 2-3 days with my designer."

    producthunt. com/posts/weblium-2-0

    • lol, there's Webflow that makes it really easy to make anything web and ppl still pay web designers to make for them anything web. Web design is actually hard.grafician
    • Had tons of discussions "I need a quick website/why don't you use Squarespace/Oh, but that's too hard" so yeah...grafician
    • ...no matter how many tools exist and how easy they are to use, people are lazy and will always pay someone to do the jobgrafician
