Graphic Design is dying

This topic is such a loaded debate... Sorry, but I am definitely going to agree with Ben99...
1.) Portland and Seattle design firms have dropped their rates significantly in regards to paying designers in the past 5 years...
2.) Staffing agencies dominate all job postings... Why? Because companies no longer hire full-time employees, especially designers, especially at the rates they once were (both figuratively and financially) - it's per project and little to no benefits >>> this saves them money and this is the model that continues to thrive >>> temp works and contractual workers over full-time employees
3.) Bad design is everywhere, it has been and will always be - people are marginally getting better and software is getting easier to use - this creates way more "pseudo-designers" and way less "serious clients"... They come to expect mediocre and are shocked by what true and talented designers charge.
4.) "Coding" has replaced "designing"... People often try to convert designers into coders... If you can do both, you are much more valuable. This "lessens" the role of a typical designer...
5.) Marketing and design has and will always be the first thing to get cut in most corporate environments unless it's the core business need. You combine those factors (amongst several others) and you have what most markets are experiencing today >>> an oversaturated market where everyone is a designer, yet there still only are a few really good designers per city

Another "service" has emerged on Facebook. "Lightboard" which promises to be a "turnkey" solution for all your graphic needs. Woohoo. I swear every profession out there is going to be commoditized and turned into some vc funded scheme.

The value of Graphic design, at whatever quality, is driven by its market, NOT the hopes of graphic designers.
Much like restaurant food, the customer (client) who is satisfied by a £5.00 burger meal is unlikely to value the nuances and craft of an a-la-cart menu from a Michelin starred chef. And, neither restaurant or any of those in between are likely to fail because of the others product.
A $5 logo has a place in the market. But, It's likely to be exploiting cheap labour from developing countries or, more likely, end up costing a lot more, hence 'from $5'.
We will never be able to sell a £50k identity project to a person that cannot see the value in it. So, if you are threatened by someone selling a logo for $5 then I don't think you truly understand the service you are providing or the markets you operate in.

You can also spend $5 on a hooker, won't be the same as the $3000 one
- problem is young designer that have talent will work 10-20 hours on a 5$ logo because they're just starting. devaluating the profession.Bennn
- We all did it. We disrupted other people. We're just old enough now to feel the effect on the other side.ETM

I've noticed innovation in design change a great deal with web and mobile.
5 or 6 years ago, designers would be much more adventurous in how they structured and designed a user interface.
However, now that the public is becoming a bit more attuned to the language of digital media and devices, it only makes sense that design is starting to become a bit more standardized.
After all... how many ways should you design a web button? Statistics are also a factor in the patterning of design trends. It'd be difficult for users if navigation was inconsistent, etc. Many people who approach me for web design work are better served by just making a Squarespace site. Even still... they always want something that Squarespace doesn't do by default.
A good designer is still a useful asset who knows about space, form & function, typography, and intent. When I hear 'graphic design,' I just think of posters and book covers...screen printing & t-shirt design. There is a physical element to that, which may not be as desirable as it once was... records vs. streaming music services (although records have a solid base) for example.
It's true that everyone thinks they're a designer, but it's still surprisingly difficult to find consistently good designers when you delve into the hiring process. Some of it is taste... some is attitude... not moving with the times... arrogance and unwillingness to change.
We should always be open to change.

"We are not graphic designers. We are problem solvers who happen to do use graphics as a means for providing the solutions and ninjas."
"Thats why their is an industry push for strategic design, design thinking and business strategy."
No offense, but most designers don't know the first thing about solving business problems.
Most of them don't even understand marketing, let alone bringing together finance, operations, engineering, sales, partnerships, or attracting talent and managing teams.
- yes, you have outlined the issue well ... and you've highlighted the difference between pros and amateurs while simultaneously justifying the cost difference.monospaced
- of course there's no offense, because most people here are good designers who would make their client's business problem the NUMBER ONE consideration in any jobmonospaced
- so, no offense, but I have to completely disagree: most "real" designers DO know about solving problems and understand marketing, finance etc.monospaced
- No, they really don't have a clue.fate
