If a crane fell in NYC, does it make a sound?

Perhaps the issue is that people are relying on mainstream media to give accurate reports on a disaster - you should be looking at local blogs, social media, and local news reports who will detail the realities of local situations.

Awash in pathos, Today we are all third-world Manhattanites.

How about demonstrating compassion and offering assistance to anyone affected by any disaster, regardless of your assumptions of whether they need it or not?
- That would be nice.yurimon
- Okay sure. Anyone? Can I help? Let me know.Horp
- Or... or wait, oh, did you just mean 'send money'?Horp
- Why don't you go roll up your sleeves and help rebuild something, Horp...since you don't wanna part with your money.monkeyshine

@Horp
I'm watching this all go down from sunny California, hoping my apartment is okay (I left he window open 2 inches) and that my building isn't flooded (it borders an evacuation zone), and that my friends aren't too affected by the loss of utilities and local damage, but I can't BELIEVE how dramatic the news stations are making this. One of them is serious while the other is fanatical. It's upsetting when seriously, all people want is the simple plain truth, not an an interview with a housewife freaking out about how to deal with kids who can't go trick-or-treating.- American "news" is all sensationalism and outrage and shock, all the time.i_monk
- i_monk I hear ya, but that's not true of all our media.monospaced
- I'm in Great Britain. Its not just America. Its not exactly overly-dramatic here, more like a ...Horp
- ... mismatch between the sensational story they want to tell and the hard facts they#ve got to base it on.Horp
- Sort of makes it seem like a big fucking deal and simultaneously a load of bullshit in the same report.Horp

@Homp
your right it seems to be over exaggerated event in the news. even if the reach of the storm is vast. the amount of lives lost is so small. A real disaster is the earthquake tsunami in asia and the earthquake following tsunami and nuclear disaster in japan.
This just over dramatized baby fit. A little inconvenient to say the most.
which culture is most sensitive to have their convenience over everything else? sell there soul for convenience? just sayin

So just how bad would you say the situation is now NYCers?
Its hard to guage from the sensationalist news reports. It seems to me that everyone wants to report it as being an majpr league national disaster, and yet the only evidence available seems to be some felled trees and a few feet of rain water.
On a scale of 01-to-10
How bad things?- Power out all over, ConEd stations blowing up, subways all flooded, tunnels/bridges flooded, airports fucked.monospaced
- it wasn't just rain water, it was ocean swells, BIG differencemonospaced
- in parkslope, brooklyn it's a 01Douglas
- battery and midtown tunnel remain floodedwhatthefunk
- Interesting. News over here is full of drama, less facts. You made it more real in these side notes than the BBC has managed in 24 hrs.Horp
- Rand in MIA. worried sick over here. 10! 10! 10!Douglas
- Agreed - I live in Park Slope and was VERY fortunate. No loss of power or internet. no damage to the car either.bulletfactory
