And in other news, the "kafkaesque", big, bad government was putting homeless up in hotels for 6 months?! What's the alternative? Permanent, free hotels?

Hey Guys,
I put together a fund raiser to help rebuild my dad/grandmother's house which got pretty fucked up during the storm, he said the damages to the lower level and roof are going to be pretty costly, upwards of $100K. FEMA gave my dad and grandmother a small stipend for hotel living which they are going to put into the house instead while they stay at my dad's girlfriend's place.
This will ends on Nov 17th – We're $140 from the $1000 mark. I'm matching every dollar up to that point. If all things pan out financially with FEMA this will go directly to the Red Cross long Island Chapter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We finally got our boiler repaired last nite. The oil tank in the basement was leaking burner oil and the fumes were stinking up the building all week. So, not only do we have heat and hot water but no longer need to have the windows open in the freezing cold.

My house is not going to have power until end of the week. Even after that I need to replace heat before I can return home.

My parents have been with me since Wednesday morning and just got word that their South Jersey town got power today but anticipate losing it with this new snow storm. My grandmother in North West Jersey is staying with neighbors who have a generator and my aunt and uncle in North Jersey still have no power. Now they're talkin snow - holy shit.

I live on Ave C and 8th in the Lower East Side. I finally made it to work today after spending the week tossing my stuff out. We still don't have heat or hot water but I'm grateful the power is back on and we're ok.
This is the police station on my block which has been used in a bunch of the articles:
I hope everyone else is ok.

I'm going to spend this evening helping my building's superintendant clean up the basement floor. He lived down there, and apparently dealt with head-high water and he's alone cleaning up.

What an insane experience this has been. Still downed trees resting on power lines, roads closed, fist fights for gas...and in my cozy little town my neighbors are helping each other with power cords, chainsaws, food, whatever. It's nice to see the storm bring out some level of humanity.
