Has many of you gotten or received royalties off your work? Much like an actors of a movie or artists of an album, I'm assuming that many designer these days, are just taking a paycheck for hourly or per project design work, and not getting a penny off its continuous usage in royalties.

I agree...it's outrageous

Not many designers create work that is rights managed in the first place. We work on projects that are estimated by hours and such, and paychecks are allocated accordingly. A smart designer figures the "scale" of the usage into the agreed-upon quote.

This is a very contentious issue that appears in our studio quite a lot. Photographers for instance have done very well in the way that they have set out quite clear rules around usage and copyright of their imagery.
The design industry still lacks solid rules such as these that are accepted as 'industry standard', and enforced across the board so to speak...

plenty of designers get royalties. sell a wordpress template, sell an icon set, sell a photo or illustration -> royalties.
royalties in consulting work however are generally only attached to a company that can't pay full-rate and therefore agrees to an equity swap or ongoing payment. These are mostly bad customers with shakey finances that want this sort of arrangement, and best avoided unless you really believe in them, and can see some potential for their success.

Been making decent whisky money off the few fonts that I created and have for sale here and there. Aside from that, it's just the normal salary arrangement for my 9-to-5, and paychecks for the freelance projects.

One thing that really pisses me off - and we just had it..Is when a client lands the 'we want the files' on you post job completeion. Then they act as if you're unreasonable by saying 'no'. Stuff like this is even further in the opposite direction to royalties...basically not EVEN paying for your hours but treating the business like a disposable commodity/sweatshop.
