I fuckn love flying, started pretty young, had my share of scary moments,
but I'll never give up the sensation of flying up into the sky and seeing the ground from above.
plus if we crash that would be the most painless kind of death me think

Over the years I've taken the habit to falling asleep before take off. It's a way of putting myself in a mood where none of this is a big deal.
I do have a little fear inside though but I'm on the plane, meaning I somehow agreed to go somewhere or want to go there, at that point what happens is out of my hands and I refuse to worry about it until I have a reason to. Self-control, bitches!
- sleeping pills?senseg
- nope, nothing. I just sit, buckle up, earplugs on, hoodie on.spl33nidoru
- i do have that light and soft hoodie that i'll try and wear for flights, just pull the hood down to my eyes.spl33nidoru

A good understanding of probability wouldn't lead anyone liken the odds of dying in a plane crash to the odds of winning the lottery. Its a very simplistic comparison that doesn't stand up to even casual scrutiny. The mechanisms of the two processes are so dissimilar that its like comparing a bacteria to an emotion.

- Awesome. I'm now Mr Autistic. Mono... you're reign is over.
= )Horp - Anyway, my point is: if you telly ourself its quite safe because of the odds of winning the lottery, you're a fucking idiot.Horp

- Are you calling me a fucking idiot?? I said believing one or the other is just as irrational/rational.inv

I love flying, always have, and no - I can't understand how blaze people can be about the brilliantly exciting event of accelerating smoothly to 200mph and just stepping into the air, up up up at a crazy angle, like stairs, to the next level, where a levelling off causes you to think you're falling, then banking round, seeing the ground out of the window, then the cloud - hope there's nothing in our way, and thence upward into the brilliant blue sky - it's always a good day up there. A timeless glorious permanent destination, it doesn't feel like you're moving, you just wait out the day in this heavenly deep blue wonder with unknown cloud landscapes below you, uncharted, unseen, and the ground or ocean below with all the other people going about their tiny business while you dart briefly above them in a comfy seat, idly watching tv or having a little sleep. Ahh. The best way to travel, ever.

For two and a half months every week I flew back and forth to Denmark to work and back home for the weekend, I became so desensitized, it became the thing I hate the most, not for the fright of flying, but because of all the waiting. It is such a time waste, so boring

What's the problem?
Carry-on = parachute
Seat choice = emergency exit row(s)'nuff said.

I was flying over the Rockies once and the plane felt as if it dove about a mile or two...This happened about 4-5 times..Some lady screamed and that made me super nervous and claustrophobic...Luckily, my friend had a valium.

I had a horrible turbulent experience flying Air India into Chicago and it put the fear of flying into me with a vengeance.

I read this before a couple of years later just before a round-the-world trip which comprised 60+ hours flying in a month. I've been OK flying ever since. And I still like curries.

My issue with flying has never been about turbulence. I know planes are built for that. Its knowing all the tiny wires build deep down inside the plane that they dont inspect very often since it requires a ton of work to get to them.
There is an absurd amount of wires and systems within a plane. One little problem can take the whole thing down. Thats what bugs me. If I knew they were checking this shit out constantly Id feel a little better but I saw a show on discovery and they can go years without looking at some of the deeper wires.
- so... only fly on newer planes?ebertzjaw
- Luckily the "deeper wires" are not systems critical. It would be stupid to obscure those in any fashion.Jacque
- They're pretty critical if they become frayed and catch fire, which has brought down many passenger planes.CygnusZero4
- "Many." How many exactly?Jacque
- CygnusZero40
So many passenger planes have been brought down by wires they just cant easily inspect, I guess ValueJet being one of the most famous.
I think the most horrifying one was TWA800. The cockpit exploded off that fucking thing, then the plane kept rising with many of the people still alive with just a giant hole in front of them. That must have sucked.
- twa800 was hit by a missileebertzjaw
- Hehe TWA800 has nothing to do with wires. It was a fuel reserve or something.CygnusZero4

I take adivan. Go to your doctor tell them your feelings.
1 pill makes me feel as cool as Miles Davis.

i remember flying into vegas once, simple daytime flight, and i was snoozing as it was approaching the landing, i guess the plane hit the runway really hard like as if there was another 10ft left to drop, but there wasn't, major cross winds i guess, i bounced awake and looked around like wtf and everyone was freaking and the woman beside me was crying. the next few days were horrible as i was murdered by the slots. the end.

I usually pay the extra for the end row seats with the extra leg room. If the plane crashes its would be my job to open the door and throw the 15kg inflatable ramp out.
Bonus is you get to sit opposite a hostess and you can tell from their eyes if you are going to crash, if you do crash you're the first one out (if you have arms).
- this is double true if the hostess is a twinkieprophetone
- lol if you have armsCygnusZero4

yeah turbulence makes me nervous as well. i try to book seats as close to the front as possible. at least in my own experience, it seems like a smoother flight. i also catch myself looking over to the stewardess for reactions. lol.

I don't really like flying, but it's more the whole unpleasant mood of the thing. The airline people are always in such shitty moods, and the other passengers are usually nasty as fuck. And getting constantly lectured about "rules" by overhead disembodied voices is a drag.
But I'd give anything to be going somewhere else about now.

It's amazing how many flights go down that had legit technical problems, but could have been avoided if not for pilot error.
That SwissAir111 flight my buddy Rich died on could have actually been avoided. The pilots smelled smoke in the cockpit which spread to the cabin. They had a bit of time after that. Well after that they decided to waste time flying over the ocean to dump fuel, trying to figure out which airport to go to, when they really should have just landed the fucking thing immediately and could have avoided it, possibly anyway.
Once they wasted too much time the fire started killing the planes systems and boom, nose down straight into the ocean. So many examples of this where a plane has a real problem but they still have time to just get down to the damn ground, but they waste time trying to figure shit out.
- Swiss Air 111 dumped fuel because they couldn't land with a full tank of fuel. Too heavy.Jacque
- If you're faced with a dire emergency you'll figure out how to get it on the ground, not worry about protocol.CygnusZero4
- Trust me ive read a lot about this. You can land heavy, its just not normally advised in normal circumstances.CygnusZero4
- You smell smoke in the cockpit, that isnt a normal circumstance and protocol goes out the window.CygnusZero4
- Problem was these guys relied on the books when they should have landed and wasted too much time.CygnusZero4
- Trying to land heavy is tougher on pilots. Id rather deal with that than a fire.CygnusZero4
- I know about the emergency protocol, shit, I've got a copy of the Federal Aviation Regulations sitting no more than 10 feet away.Jacque
- ... than 10 feet from me. Required reading if you want a pilots license.Jacque
- Plus, crash landing with full fuel + plane on fire = worst case scenario.Jacque
- I didnt say crash landing. They had quite a bit of time from first smelling smoke in the cockpit.CygnusZero4
- They reviewed this on discovery. They really should have made an emergency landing much quicker.CygnusZero4
- Instead they were worried about what the manual said they should do for normal landings.CygnusZero4

I'm the same. I loved flying but after a scary experience I started to worry when things shook round a bit. However I realised that when I ride the bus I dont worry that it bumps about, so why worry in the air. So when the turbulence starts i remember the bus and I dont worry. Get yourself a mental switch like that and fly worry free.
