Just had a play with apple maps again. Last time was when it was just released and it was utterly crap. Couldn't find anything. It even said it couldn't find London.
Looks like they've been hard at work, it's actually really quite good now, at least for the small time I played with it.
Fund everything I searched for, including fairly obscure stores. The satnav style directions are great, too.
Still don't think I'm ready to update the ios and replace google maps just yet, however.
- Mainly out of principle. It looked like a good enough replacement I must admit.set

Yup. After doing extensive road travelling over the past 15 years with much of it long before having GPS nav or internet in the vehicle, we learned that you always trust road signs first, over maps. Maps will put you in the right direction and are necessary when you can't find a sign, but signs are almost never wrong.

So are the 3D maps on iPhone 4? Or is it just iPad?
- iPhone 4S & 5, and iPad 2 & new iPad. iPhone 4 gets new maps, but no 3D.Nathan_Adams

They are a regression indeed, what a mess.

Does not google have the maps app for download?

Seriously I need to be on the Waze payroll. Im constantly selling it to everyone that has an iphone. Its free and murders every other GPS app Ive used. The maps are all accurate and people are constantly updating the traffic situation everywhere.
Apple cant compete with that and are wasting their time, but I guess some apple people will actually use inferior products just because it was made by apple. >_>

Not yet, hopefully they will soon. You can access the web through Safari though but it's slower.

So Google now says that they and Apple had a year left in a current agreement for Google Maps, and Apple surprised them with this move. Which is why they are still several months away from the iOS app everyone wants. So Apple could have used that year to work on these maps more, and instead thought, I suppose, thought it was more important to highlight/release with the iPhone 5/iOS6 release, rather than have waited for the next release.
Reading between the lines, it seems Google expected it, just not until the remaining agreement concluded.

Tim Cook apologises for ios6 Maps:

- Interesting that it links competitors map offerings. At least Apple accept they're massively inferior, good movepig

here is a thought, if your lost call someone and ask for directions, and if you need your phone as your primary means of directions maybe you should just stay home

according to ios6 maps my house is located 5km away from where it should be even though it properly labeled the street on which my house is on.

Jim Dalrymple says Google hasn't submitted their maps app to Apple for review, this guy has good contacts in Apple, so there it goes.

I think you should use the new maps before you jump on the bandwagon. Haven't had a single issue yet.

CityMapper already does this amazingly for London at least- Exactly. Everyone had it except apple. Now they will have integrated public transport. Finally!monospaced

and Google just continues to destroy Apple and makes them look like worthless junk.
Google takes knife out of Apple's wound, sticks it back in, twists.
People are still getting news of Apple's humiliating apology and offer of alternative map apps for iOS in their streams. Then Google goes and announces a quality upgrade for its already-superior Maps product. The company announced today that more high-resolution satellite images and more 45-degree aerial views have been added to dozens of cities on Google Maps.

>Whilst the west goes crazy complaining about Apple's maps, looks like on the other side of the world, they're actually better than Googles...
No it's not.
Unless you consider China the only part of "the rest of the world".
Here in Japan, for example, you'll get a mixture of Korean, Chinese and Japanese in the maps. Confusing.
Not to mention that you can't search as freely (and also in English) compared to google. And a whole lot of other gem,
like trainstations being labeled "Pachinko Gundam",
or an elementary school right on the emperors garden.
Or a paper factory being Haneda airport.More here:
