America is hilarious
You can buy guns but not big soda.
- Nope. You're wrong on that. Assault weapons and most guns are banned in NYC too.monospaced
- But everywhere else in America you can buy soda, guns and bibles under one roof.utopian

I think the problem is the stupidly inflated sizes available in the US. Not just soda. A portion size should be what is recommended by nutritionist etc. In the UK if you look at a 500ml bottle of coke it says on the side 'per serving' and then tells you that the bottle contains two servings. As if anyone is going to save half the bottle for tomorrow.
So I get why NYC are doing this, because let's face it if 16 fl oz is already two servings why would you want to sell someone more than 2 servings in the guise of only being one. That's the kind of mentality that causes obesity. The mindset that it's socially acceptable to eat or drink that much in one sitting. This new law would in theory change perceptions over time so that it's not acceptable to drink huge sugary drinks anymore. In the same way that you're shunned for smoking in California. Those 7Eleven Big gulp things are insane. As are the sizes in Starbucks:

So, the Coca-Cola polar bear finds out that he can't go buy a 20oz Coke, so he goes outside and flips out. Then he comes back in and his polar bear friend is like, "bitch please, this is America, I gots tons of these, drink one." And it's all good.

711 must have a great lobby. Their Big Gulps are still legal here in NYC.
- I don't think the ban is in effect for another couple of weeks.monospaced
- They're still exempt though from what I hear.instrmntl

The entire country should do this. But God forbid the "gov't" tell us how to "live" out fucking lives.
Oh, but when it comes to needing emergency health care for your fucking diabetes, or maybe you couldn't see the banana peel over your belly, you are fine with distributing the cost to everyone else.
Same goes for flying. Why, or how, on Earth, can anyone think a 500lb person should pay the same as a 150 bl person??
So much hypocrisy in this country it makes my head spin.

Personally, I find myself fortunate to be in the eyes of NYC in recent times as they push for more positive agendas. Curbing corporations from overselling a beverage designed to only make money at the expense of their dumb, and physically addicted consumers. As well as giving out free Nicotine gums to those who those who smoke.
Who exactly is the bad guy? Companies like Pepsi fight against our rights to know if they use genetically modified synthetics in their drinks. They do, and have been hiding these facts for years. Meanwhile we pay them to engulf their corn based foods like pigs in their feedstock.
Is the city actually telling us how "we" should live? I think they merely curbed the corporate dogs from shitting on its people. You can still buy big drinks in two obviously. If corn based products are too powerful to resist, corporations win. Otherwise the city wins by having healthier tuned residence. I would never reside with these corporations in favor of companies like Pepsi who can create a company making hundreds of chemical variations of corn based foods, the same shit they feed their livestock before slaughtering it.

I tried to buy a small soda which looked to be a 12oz cup, and they wouldn't sell it because it was only part of the kids "lite" meal. This was one of the AMC theaters in NY. Something was always wrong with the way they force you to buy large amounts. Finally someone took a stand.

The beverage companies are not letting in on how dangerous their products are. They've been hiding all this information until recent times people have exploited their business. When should the city step in? When we begin to kill each other, which is what these corporations are trying to do to the people.
- No they aren't. The nutritional info is on each bottle.monospaced

I thought this was ridiculous, until my recent trip and saw what passes for drink sizes in the states. A "small" soda was almost the size of a large here in Australia. Same goes with coffee. And then there's the "gentle" encouragement to buy bigger. The Burger King at LAX (I didn't go to any other one, for obvious reasons) had drink prices set so that the difference between small, medium and large was only 10c increments.
