I am not part of the demographic for this film so will not be watching, i.e. not a teenage Twilight missing girl.

constant BR comparisons is kind of annoying... for some reason if you lean into the lord-of-the-flies genre you are labeled a copy cat. Meanwhile the masses line up for superhero after superhero movie which all follow the exact same story arc.
I just loved watching a hollywood film that for once, wasn't about the end of the world with lazers shooting up into the sky or meteors falling from the sky.
- the constant urge to chase red lasers is awesome tho...pango

am i the only one who thought BR was shit?

Just watch it with a date. chicks dig it. so that's a good thing.

The only similarity i see with BR is the aspect of kids killing each other and it being broadcast live.

Just watched the second. I really liked it. It's 2.5 hours, but it went by really quickly. Good sign.

I really enjoyed it and prefer it to,what I remember of, Battle Royale.
I found BR very entertaining and the world they created in it was great, but the motives were less clear. The way Hunger Games brings you into the world of the oppressors was very interesting.
I think a lot of the negative comparisons with BR are down to glorification of Japanese cinema and the assumption that a US-made film with similar themes to a Japanese movie is simply a ripoff. Hunger Games is very much a "Hollywood Blockbuster" product but I think it was done very well.
I'm looking forward to the second movie.

whatever, i liked it. and like scarabing said, these movies help you forget your shitty life for a few hours, aka for entertainment purposes only. and no, i'm not 12.

i enjoyed it. this shit's not fellini though, i don't understand why a movie has to be either a totally flawless masterpiece or it's total shit. not sure what you guys expected going into it beyond basically a teen movie based on a bunch of books for young adults
- all these movies are for is to make you forget your shitty life for a couple hoursscarabin

I saw the second installment, Catching Fire, last night. It's a definite improvement on the first film, a little more faithful to the book and with slightly better drama.

Hunger Games was inspired by the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. In it, Athenian youth (equal numbers of boys and girls) are regularly sent to Crete as tributes to the Cretan conquerors, and put to death in games to entertain the aristocracy by dying in an arena-like maze with a hybrid monster at the end. Theseus – who volunteered as tribute and is aided by someone on the outside who fell in love with him – wins.
The only thing it has in common with Battle Royale, and the only part where it departs from the Theseus framework, is in having the kids (mostly) kill each other.

good but nowhere near as good as battle royale. but somewhat more disturbing, because it was a PG-12 with the same subject of kids killing kids. battle royale was an 18.
