Hunger Games was inspired by the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. In it, Athenian youth (equal numbers of boys and girls) are regularly sent to Crete as tributes to the Cretan conquerors, and put to death in games to entertain the aristocracy by dying in an arena-like maze with a hybrid monster at the end. Theseus – who volunteered as tribute and is aided by someone on the outside who fell in love with him – wins.

The only thing it has in common with Battle Royale, and the only part where it departs from the Theseus framework, is in having the kids (mostly) kill each other.
