film was a pleasant surprise, but I didn't like the world: clothings, interiors and all that was a bit too much kitchy for my taste...

I never read the book, nor was I interested in doing so.
I haven't seen the japanese version yet, and I only watched Hunger Games because it was free.I thought it was going to be kids fighting on a jungle because they were starving and they needed to each each other, it turned out to be some sort of 'new school' version of Running Man.
I liked it overall, I now want to see the japanese version which I'm told is a bit more dark.
If you don't put this movie on a pedestal (it was never meant to be on one) and you watch it, you will have a good time, if you start thinking that is some sort of cinematic classic deserving the prestige that some of the ones included on the Criterion Collection, then of course you will hate it, but my question to you is, why did you ever thought it belonged there?
Put it on the category of 'cool movies to watch on dvd' and you won't be disappointed.
Also, there are no vampires in it.

I'm at the opposite end from inteliboy. I thought it was terrible in all ways. Acting, directing... but especially the story nuance/details. Don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I was not a fan at all :( I really wanted to be, but it just let me down.

I'm going to be the lame-o that comes in and says the book is way better than the movie. Obviously it always is.
Everyone I know that's read it agrees that it is a page turner. I wish I didn't see the movie (watched it the day I finished the book) until I finished reading the whole series. The characters I made up in my head are clashing with the actors in the movie.
Aside from the detail that's lost when compressing it into the movie I feel the characters were too clean, polished, and teeny bopper for my tastes. I think a lot more could have been done in this aspect to show more desperation. They felt a lot more sterile than the twilight movie characters.
- oh and I'm going to restart part II in a couple of daysfourth

My 11 year old daughter is obsessed with it...

I must admit that I never paid to much attention to it as I also thought it would be another teen saga but my wife read the books and told me it was actually a solid plot and that I would enjoy them.
Have not read the books but I watched the movie today and I must say I liked it. The cast was good (Woody!!!) and I found it to be a direct stab at the Government/System and the way we are "ruled".
You're out of luck and lost your job? Well guess what, now you're gonna loose your house! Oh, and your insurance is gonna triple next month... and you know what? There is fucking nothing you can do but keep playing the game and try to stay afloat.
And the moment something or someone is about to step up and challenge or unmask the system, something will always happen. Change of plans, new rules/game, a national threat, a new war or a new "pro-gay" law to keep everyone in their place and walking along (looking like heroes or showing us how much they care of course...)
Just saying...

It was ok, but I'm hungering for the Ridley Scott remake in 2 or 3 years.

I loved it. Really solid.
Great direction and some interesting themes. The cast nailed it. Agreed that the weather, thirst and hunger should have played more of a part - guess they had to lighten it up which is a shame.
Hadn't read the book or knew much about it -- if it was some kind of "teen" genre than that I'm supposed to hate on, than that flew over my head.
- since the books are written from the point-of-view of a teenage girl, it has that stigma and stylemonospaced
- but the books are definitely a little more brutal and definitely better than the PG-13 movie versionmonospaced

let me guess...
It's about a dystopian future where the youth turn out to be the only hope for change. It's a movie that serves as a warning of our current society conditions and where we may head if don't make changes soon.
Teens will eat this shit up since it's all about them and how they are good and know "right" and the adults are corrupt and are "wrong".
Haven't read a single thing about Hunger Games, but am I close?

I thought it was good, 9 out of 10. I'll likely watch the other ones when they come out too. I like action flix and thought this was entertaining and good enough that my wife would watch it too (which is extremely rare).
I hear a lot of folks compare it to Battle Royale. Personally, I thought Battle Royale was a great idea but really poor execution of a movie, way over-rated.

I just watched The Gray and I can easily say that Hunger Games was a more entertaining survival movie.

Read the book quick before seeing the film. The film failed to capture the true desperation, hardship, suffering, hunger and struggle in the Games themselves. For example, in the book, Katniss nearly dies of thirst and dehydration before finding water while in the film it shows her dashing into the woods, filling her canteen and roasting squirrels right away. These types of liberties with the depiction totally alters the feeling of the Games from what they are in the book. For this reason I feel the film didn't do the book justice.
- I agree, the biggest danger was that douche with macheteBeeswax
- In the book half the battle was with the insane environment. Nearly freezing, festering wounds, etc.monospaced

Overrated shit. Watchable though.
