Yo - just saw this on MOCO: http://mocoloco.com/archives/026…

Check out core77.com
There are a bunch of links to 3d printing and prototyping.
Overlapping geometry is a pretty big challenge to overcome. What it looks like on screen and what it needs to look like to be "prototyped" or 3d printed is a big step.
You might want to go to a school nearby that has an industrial design program and have them bring the artwork into a CAD program.
I did the school route with some motorcycle parts and it came out great.
Good luck! One of the most rewarding things ever is the day the proto shows up!!

the 3D printers are pretty pricey to own. We've been looking into purchasing one and the typical range is 3-5k, maintenance and materials not withstanding.
The good thing about sourcing them is that they usually go through a 3D/CAD person who will look at your files (much like a pre-press department) and let you know what needs to be fixed or if they can do it and whatnot. Unfortunately, they usually charge you for that service.

i really would rather not have to outsource it.. and i would rather have my own 3D printer.. i saw what http://www.stratasys.com/ was doing and i like what i saw there.. it allowed me more control.. also since i am self taught in 3D im very unsure about the meshes themselves and in reading the FAQS at shapeways, it looks like my work would have a lot of issues for the printers to deal with..
also im unsure still on my builds.. visually i try to create my vector work as 3D items.. but as most people has told me .. when its in 3D objects may not interact with each other so well and overlapping occurs..
what is a solve for that over lapping? i use Modo. maybe this isnt the thread for this question..
- i like the Dimension Printers..
their price dropped down from ferrari monies to under 15K..e-pill
- i like the Dimension Printers..

also are the prints hollow? or are they solid? if solid what is an average weight of them? is it all ABS plastic?

i understand different colour can be printed in one shot.. also moving parts in different colours too.. does a different colour change the price?
also is it more cost effective to lease or purchase a 3D printer for ones self versus outsourcing it to a print house?
i got ferrari monies!!

what are average maximum sizes for printing? i want to make my robots into toys.. what type of 3D file must i give most of these printers? is $200 a proto the ave price?
- As they should : )antimotion
- you'd have to ask your printer. All varies depending on material, size and complexity.d_rek

Awesome - thanks - I'll check it.

checkout the Thinklabs Wrapup on our site: http://www.thinklabsdesign.com/
You'll see the test prints and get an idea for the size if you browse through the project. The cost worked out to just under $200 for each prototype if I recall correctly...

Objet is a brand of 3d printers: http://www.objet.com/
It varies by size, material-some 3d printers allow you to spec different grades of plastics and sometimes even different materials- , complexity, etc. There is a maximum scale(size) and resolution all 3d printers are capable of.
We have a 3D printing source that is local (Southeast MI) for us but have tried some online services. The quality is never as good as you'd like, but for prototyping it's cost-effective and usually serves it's purpose.

so "Object printers" are diff from 3d printers? and by vary, how do they charge, by size of object I guess?
Thanks for the info for sure....

Prices vary wildly for 3D printing and it all depends on what you want.
We have had success with Objet printers in terms of quality level, but the prints we've receieved are never as polished as the samples they'll show you.

Anybody had to get something printed as a comp or possibly a few pieces?
I'm in NYC.... Know any good spots?
Many thanks...
