Addendum... Looking for advice, input, experience... conversation if you will.

I had to admit to myself that I'm not a musician. I enjoy making noises that sometimes have melody. Programming drum beats is fun. But, as far as recording and mixing, mastering, being able to sing, or play an instrument with any natural ability? No, it doesn't exist.

That's why I never finished my conversation autoflavour. He wanted to discuss what my goals were. Frankly, the few times I tried to write him, I realized I had no goals, so I was essentially throwing money up in the air.

That said, I have Maschine and Ableton both legally installed. I prefer Ableton, so if I even keep one Maschine license at this point is a question. I have two licenses.

I bought a NI Mikro MK1 years ago, a used Maschine MK1 w/ new stand years ago, and a used Maschine Jam last year. Go figure, none of these controllers help me use Maschine any more effectively. Maybe I've used Ableton too long.

Yes, you read that correctly, I have three Maschine controllers and two NI software licenses that all go unused. To accompany them, I also have controllers in the form of...

    M-Audio Keystation 88es
    M-Audio Axiom 25
    Akai APC Mini
    Korg nano kontrol
    Numark Orbit
    Behringer CMD Micro
Mixtrack Pro 3 (used three times, four years ago)
    M-Audio M-Track (forgot I had)

I had an APC40 that I traded for my Mackie studio monitors.
My Onyx 820i digital mixer is still awesome.
I sometimes miss my microKorg, but it was cool sounds on a keyboard I couldn't play.
There's a monotron and a pocket operator around here somewhere too, I think.

    -

I wonder if I should put most of this stuff on reverb, etc to try to sell, or just a trip to Guitar Center to get it out of my hair and a little cash to buy an analog drum. That stuff takes up space and I'm not using it.

Anyone need a controller or Maschine license?

My new path is analog, free from the computer. I want to do more with the Model D than send MIDI to it, hence the SQ-1 and a desire for analog drums. The less expensive I make this the better.

    • Sell and simplify! Sounds like you've already made up your mind ;)microkorg
    • that part is definitely going to happen. i'm hoping for some analog drum inputimbecile
    • Couldnt go much wrong with the new behringer RD clonesmicrokorg
    • they look great for the cost. and... I can't find my monotron, but the pocket operator I have is the PO-12 rhythm.imbecile
    • Recently got the Moog DFAM. It's incredibly fun. But not a bread an butter drum machine.mort_

      Vermona drm1 mkiii
      MFB Tanzbar (original one)

fun, surprised no one suggested these when i was thinking about buying their other repro synths to add to my model d

    • i've been ignoring them because i DIY built a system 100 clone about 5 years ago and these work out cheaper than the parts :=|kingsteven
    • please clarify.. are you saying one could buy these cheaper now, than you built them then? each piece is ~$99imbecile
    • as you dohans_glib
    • no he's saying the opposite - it cost him more to build one himself.hans_glib
    • read again, that is what i wrote.imbecile
    • i have read again, and by some witchcraft i can now see that it is indeed my badhans_glib
    • high five! thanks for the clarificationimbecile
    • Yep. Panel and pcb for each DIY module was 30 - 45 each and while components are cheap as chips... all those knobs, switches and sockets add up.kingsteven
    • I have frequency central ones and they have a few tweaks from the originals but some of the behringer modules are doubles (vca, adsr)... much cheaper for a systkingsteven
    • system + DIY modules have no resale value!kingsteven
    • i see, thanks for the additional info.imbecile

So this is random happy accident. That broken Vermona retroverb I was sold by eBay scammer.. he of course flaked out and eBay eventually just refunded me the money.

so I got a free, albeit broken, retroverb

Already speaking with the manufacturer to see what they can help with.. cause at the moment, anything to make it work and I'm happy..

    • stupid thing is, I think 808's are totally overrated.. but still, I am a gear whore and this must be ownedautoflavour
    • Behringer are making all the gear we want other manufacturers to re-release. It's genius!microkorg
    • i mean all this synth stuff is designed by Midas in England right? almost a shame Uli loves slapping his name on synths.kingsteven
    • oh mannnn, behringer you're killing me! haha... I was seriously considering the tr-08 but looks like I will be patiently waiting for this beastprophetone
    • Ugghh I was gonna get a Nava 909 clone, but now it looks like I might have to wait for the RD 909ltjohnrambo
    • its not where its designed, its where its made.. and sadly Behringer has a terrible track record of using budget manufacturers in China for everythingautoflavour
    • i totally agree about the unreliability but when i've looked in to failures in rack units it's been down to circuit design... nothing physically wrong...kingsteven
    • i imagine the midas designed circuits wouldn't be subject to the same cost-cutting. so if they do turn out to be more reliable it's a shame they have to usekingsteven

Roland Release TR-8 S .. like it’s some sort of fucking iPhone or something. Here is an idea .. just add these fucking features on the first drum machine.. nothing u have added is ground breaking technology.. u could have release all of this the first time.. instead of instantly junking the value of existing hardware.

Although very appreciative that it not longer looks like some bad prop from Tron movies

Also, blue platting bag girl is cute

    • Plastic bagautoflavour
    • "bogie"... interesting lyricsshapesalad
    • daft, but three roland boxes for the price of an elektron unit and on the same release schedule... they know what they're doing.kingsteven
    • I don't get how you properly compose music on these sorts of things. It's like making a website using squarespace, effectively stuck to a template.shapesalad
    • once you have something good, do you then mute each part and record it into a DAW and then mix it? etc. seems quicker/more flexible to go straight to the daw.shapesalad
    • For live it’s fun..autoflavour
    • Another Black&Green Tandy/RadioShack 90s Mixer style monstrosity!microkorg
    • Shapesalad, audio via USB into DAW gives you each output channel as a channel in Daw. This is a LIVE PERFORMANCE / JAMMING drum machine rather than ...microkorg
    • .. more of a composing thing like Push + Ableton Live. I can see it being great fun to jam with as it has lots of hands-on controls.microkorg
    • SD Total REcall is nice idea. But ANOTHER XOXO 606707808909 box. Really?!microkorg

    • that's cool!SunSunSun_
    • is this automated/coded effects or done manually?microkorg

    • @ 1:45 is he controlling the tempo of the synced 101 sequence with the tap tempo of the 808? never used either of these pieces, just curiousfuturefood
    • think he's talking about either tapping or programming in steps on the 808 to trigger the 101's sequencer...kingsteven

Talk me IN or OUT of buying an MPC1000!

I've got the chance of getting a really clean Black Mk2 (better pads) that's been well taken care of with no mods done apart from JJOS2XL installed and 128mb RAM upgrade.
For £400 it's a pretty decent deal for a clean machine with the full JJOS. There's some shitheaps of mis-treated 1000's going for like 350 on ebay with no upgrades.

    Why SHOULD I get one?
Well, I've lusted over the 1000's (and the 2500 and older machines) for years now and just really want one. I'd like to pimp it a little as these machines look the SEX with a little pimping.
I want to use it for fingerdrumming and sampling loops and playing along with my Numark PT-01 Scratch turntable whilst scratching.
And it'd be nice to jam away from a computer too.

    Why SHOULDN'T I get one?
    The wife will go ape.
I already have Maschine and Push AND the iMPC Pro App - maybe I could just get an Element or MPD218 for portable pads?

Any of you guys got one?
Are they a pain in the ass to program etc?

In a real tiswas here /

    • go for it! these are so cheap now.
i buy and pimp these out, then sell them.
i kept one for myself which i use on the regular, very fun.

    • Picking it up monday. Whoop!microkorg
    • The 2000XL look nice though. I was watching a fuct one on eBay. Went for £90. Nearly grabbed it for a nice shelf decoration. Nicer than a fuckin' vase ;)microkorg
    • Shouldn't get one: Akai makes garbage products. Akai of the 80's & 90's isn't Akai of today.section_014
    • Save your money, add $2-300 more and buy the MPC Live. Even with JJOS you'll find it lacking. Had one for years, sold it. Ableton is light years better.sublocked
