Anyone here know someone who suffers from migraines?

My Mom has had them for 20 years - no doctor has made any progress - I got her to see an NAET doctor, try a gluten free diet, acupuncture. Nothing!

She is in Massachusetts - anyone know specialists around there? Holistic or not.

    Here here,
my trick is to put my finger on my my skull and try to pinpoint the provenience of the pain,
once I locate it, I imagine my finger is now a lightsaber and that I'm destroying the cause of the pain.
it usually smooth it down enough for me to forget it untill I realize it still hurt,
maybe it is because I press hard enough on my skull, so it diverts the pain away...

My dad used to suffer from around two a week. He's been on more variations of medication than I can keep count of and they still can't give him anything that removes them permanently. If he catches them before they get bad and takes a tablet they tend to go fairly quickly.

He's cut all caffeine, alcohol, major sugars etc from his diet, goes to the gym around three times a week and drinks things like herbal tea and hot water. This has helped loads, he now gets around two or three a month that are actually bad.

i get them with extreme shifts in weather. so usually in the fall and spring. like if for a few days the weather is sunny, no clouds, then the next morning it's low lying clouds and 'heavy' weather. i see sparks then it happens.

in 2004 i started getting mind-bogglingly intense cluster headaches lasting 36 hours or more. i had to quit my job, quit school... all i could do was lie on my bathroom floor trying to stay cold. i vomited every hour, couldn't keep food or water down. lost over 40 pounds, took ambulance trips to the hospital over and over again... all the did was throw vicodin at me, which didn't do shit. after about a year of this and eventual full-time hospitalization they vanished inexplicably.

I was diagnosed with migraines by a doctor once.

Later in life I went to another and told him I suffered from migraines. After a few questions, he determined that I didn't suffer from migraines at all, and told me that many people are diagnosed as having them, when in reality they are just different types of headaches.

They can be caused by any number of factors from stress to foods. Regardless, I found the best medicine is always to rest my eyes in a quiet room for a period of about 20 min when I feel the headache coming on. If that's not possible I literally cup my hands over my eyes to block out the light, or put my head down and massage the back of my neck just below my hairline.

Most people probably have slightly diff methods for dealing with these, though. I have a feeling its all very much up to personal anatomy.

^ pretty fucked up, I used to get them every 2-3 years, would last for 3 months or so then disappear. Nothing you take helps, it has to run it's course, usually for about an hour, and like clockwork the exact same time each day. I never got them for the length or intensity that you described but for that 1 hour each day I was completely fucked.

I haven't had them for about 3 years now hopefully they don't come back.

    this is what helped me:

    • as soon as it starts coming on take excedrin. the caffeine and acetominophen in it can sometimes abort attacks before they start.

    • stay hydrated, but not so hydrated it increases your body's overall pressure. water only.

    • avoid wine, food dyes, nuts, cheese, chocolate, anything with more than one ingredient. every food is a chemical/drug and these ones will increase the pressure in your body via vasodilation. the only thing i was able to eat during that year was chopped, peeled green apples and honeydew melon.

    • vicodin, morphine, ecstasy, demerol will not help the pain but will make you care less. LSD can sometimes abort attacks.

    • stay cold to reduce pressure. cold baths are best, or lie on a tile floor with a wet towel on you.

    • avoid light at all costs

    • electronic devices like phones emit some kind of normally-imperceptible sound which makes it worse.

    • i dont think he is going to get his mom LSD, XTC, Morphine..e_pill
    • i don't expect him to, just sharing information i would have given everything for at that timescarabin

it's something like this, women who get them describe the pain as worse than childbirth.

Poor mother, must be hard for you too, seeing her in pain.

its ridiculous when people say "i have a migraine", when they are stood perfectly fine, chatting to me, no you have a headache. As im sure scarabin will vouch, migraines are horrific debilitating things, worst than almost anything.

i would have thought exercise would be the main help for migraines. Making sure blood flow around the brain is as smooth as possible.

  • jetSkii0

    maybe its a tumor

  • Hombre_Lobo_20

Im very very thankful that i have never had one.

Get headaches about 3 times a year too. very lucky. Got a good immune system too, cant remember when i was last ill / sore throat / cough / cold, probably a few years ago.

i dont drink, smoke, take drugs (taken a handful of paracetamol / ibuprofen my whole life) and exercise often, which helps.

  • Hombre_Lobo_20

Also, my gf suffers with them quite bad, but thats purely due to muscle tension, shes seen specialists and they tell her its this.

headaches and migraines are often caused by muscle tension in the neck (trapezius muscle) -

    and tension in the jaw.

Book her in for a massage around these areas and you may see benefits. You should also often take baths to relax muscles and aid blood flow.

Hope you find an answer dude, its horrible when you cant help your own mum.

"try a gluten free diet, acupuncture."

that's funny my wifes naturopath prescribed the same thing when we were having troubles getting pregnant... it worked!

  • Handel0

I wouldn't buy into any grandiose diet or lifestyle changes. As covered above, those who get them regularly more or less can minimize symptoms with a regular Rx regimen or an otherwise strong painkiller on a case-by-case basis.

    • and kill your liver while you are at it, or worse...trust me, i knowformed
  • Infirm0

I've suffered from them since I was a teenager, thankfully now they are much less debilitating and less frequent with no good reason. They made me quite suicidal when I was 17-23, the pain was so strong I lost the will to carry on.. I tried the toilet seat head smashing method too scarabin and the wall...
Migraines are quite hormone related and a lot of women find that when they hit the menopause they stop.. not exactly the news your mom may want to hear...

  • bzsaw0

I started getting them when I was 12 years old.

6 or so years ago by accident I found out what caused them and what keeps them away. By chance I started combat conditioning to get into better shape and become more flexible. I bought the combat conditioning series from Matt Furey. http://www.mattfurey.com/combat_… Yes the site looks crazy like one of those scam sites but it was legit.

Here is a pic of me doing a back bend last week

After doing these stretches regularly they went away and don't come back unless I stop doing them on a regular basis. I usually do them 3 times a week. I found out why this worked when I hurt my shoulder and went to a physical therapist who explained that my lower and upper neck muscles would tighten and restrict blood flow to my head, triggering the migrane.

Hope she can find something that helps. I personally don't think drugs help. For me it came down to body mechanics, figuring out what was causing the problem and fixing the issue.
