Do you have a car to get around? You're most likely staying in a touristy/yuppie part of SantaMonica. If you've got no wheels, then the best you'll be able to do is head toward Venice and hot the bars along AbbotKinney that have a little better vibe to them. If you do have a car, then I'd bet that SilverLake, EchoPark, and parts of Hollywood will be more to your liking... that's where most Brooklyn people gravitate to. To get anywhere decent, it's always a car ride away. As for beach & surf, LA actually kinda sucks. The best you can do is up in Malibu, or down south in Orange County and SanDiego. It might be tough to find a good rock show or even a hipstery art opening early in the week though.

Your logo reminds me very much of i_monks logo. particularly the subtle colour treatment on the circle.

    Yours -

yikes.. the hostel? that's your first mistake. I've heard nothing good about the hostels in LA period.

Hopefully you have a car. that's kind of key in Los Angeles if you want to get around and see anything. Drive up the coast, hit Matador state beach (it's near the northern most part of malibu.

    http://craigwolf.com/news/uploaded_images/CRW_0587v2-734258.jpg
it'll be cold but it's still fun with great tide pools, tunnels and caves to go through.

on your way back to santa monica, hit malibu seafood, it's great. The fried/battered shrimp is pretty awesome -- i always regret ordering something else.

if you have a chance, see jon brion at the largo. you need to get your tix in advance if you want to get in. He has a residency there and it's probably the best "hollywood" experience you can have.

Not far from largo... a street full of great Ethiopian food on fairfax blvd. Take your pick there's a handful near each other on the same street.

In Santa Monica and venice, some of the best mexican food comes out at night. Taco trucks, son. Check it out.

The J Paul Getty museum is a pretty epic building. The perminent collection is okay in my opinion but there are always interesting things traveling through -- not sure what right now. But, that's free especially if you take a bus there and you don't have to park. If you get a friend to drive you bring a student ID and you can park for free. otherwise, it's like 20 bucks but there's no entry cost otherwise. It's got a great view from up there, easily accessible from where you are on the west side.

More westside stuff within walking distance to where you are:
Bay City Deli on Lincoln. (Godmother Sandwich)
    Father's Office on Montana & 10th. (Burger)
The Otheroom on AbottKinney. (loungey bar)

a short bus ride up to Sawtelle Blvd. which is a small Japan town with some good places to eat and stores like Giant Robot.
also a short bus ride on the west side would be The Arsenal and Liquid Kitty which are decent bars on Pico.

You could also make a reservation to tour the Eames house which is walkable from where you are. http://eamesfoundation.org/

The art galleries at Bergamont Station might be cool too, though some are hit/miss.

    • also cheap eats: ChiliBurger at Tommy's on Pico&Lincoln. And fish tacos at LaSalsa.Douglas1/2
and getting a six pack and hitting the beach after midnight.Douglas2/2

The weather is epic right now. If I were in SM, and on holiday... I'd do this.

Rent a bike, head down to Manhattan Beach on the bike path. 10 mile ride. Hitup the Manhattan Beach Brewery to re-hydrate and then head back to the venice pier. Dinner at Hinano Bar for one of the best burgers on the west side. Cheap beer too, great pics on the wall of the pier's circa 1915.

Night, walk to Abbot Kinney like shellie said. The Other Room is a great Beer/Wine spot if you have friends to meet up with. You can get a brew on tap for $7. Lunch next door at 3 Squares and if you want to go deep... There are a few crazy places on Abbot that are great for cuisine. But guessing that's not the case cause of $$$ and the Hostel.

Next day, lunch at Library Ale house on main. Dunno if they do lunch, but dinner is a must there. Good beer once again.

    Beach it. Watch the sunset.

Then up to Malibu and prolly some Neptunes Net fun. On the way back, stop off for some hiking. There are some really great spots to soak up the view around here. Runyon Canyon in Hollywood is a great view. Maybe spend the evening walking around the streets there. Melrose and La Brea is a great start to walk/shop/drink if you head west. American Rag has a great selection of jeans/pants if you need to stock up.

Cafe Verona is right across the street. Favorite breakfast spot.

Next day, Downtown, geeez... That's a big one. Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner at Bottega Louie and 7 grand across the street.

Fly home on the red eye Business class on Virgin America.

    :)

    • If you ride, it's 20 miles collective, and you'll need to rent a lock too.nthkl1/2
the other room has all the big windows open in the afternoons when with good weather. hiking -- good idea. backbone trail.shellie2/2

LA downtown is not like what you would expect a downtown to be like, but there are a bunch of hipstery bars all over downtown now, and you might just be lucky enough to see someone taking a crap on the corner while you're at it. Pretty interesting stuff. :P but then you can roll right over to echo park or silverlake from there.

    • Totally. York Bar in Atwater Village is legit. Had a great time Saturday there.nthkl

I stayed at that hostel the first time I came to cali!

grab your board and skate south on the boardwalk till you get to venice beach, they have a great skatepark there, it's free and no helmet needed.

    • If you dont have a board, rent one at the beach, or a bike, it will still be funMiguex

It's funny how Echo Park is now a hipster safe haven, when a few years back the only thing most folks could do was score some drugs or get their wig pushed back.

    • lol. i almost lost my life in frog town. east side gentrification left the place nearly unrecognizable.shellie
