yikes.. the hostel? that's your first mistake. I've heard nothing good about the hostels in LA period.

Hopefully you have a car. that's kind of key in Los Angeles if you want to get around and see anything. Drive up the coast, hit Matador state beach (it's near the northern most part of malibu.

it'll be cold but it's still fun with great tide pools, tunnels and caves to go through.

on your way back to santa monica, hit malibu seafood, it's great. The fried/battered shrimp is pretty awesome -- i always regret ordering something else.

if you have a chance, see jon brion at the largo. you need to get your tix in advance if you want to get in. He has a residency there and it's probably the best "hollywood" experience you can have.

Not far from largo... a street full of great Ethiopian food on fairfax blvd. Take your pick there's a handful near each other on the same street.

In Santa Monica and venice, some of the best mexican food comes out at night. Taco trucks, son. Check it out.

The J Paul Getty museum is a pretty epic building. The perminent collection is okay in my opinion but there are always interesting things traveling through -- not sure what right now. But, that's free especially if you take a bus there and you don't have to park. If you get a friend to drive you bring a student ID and you can park for free. otherwise, it's like 20 bucks but there's no entry cost otherwise. It's got a great view from up there, easily accessible from where you are on the west side.
