I cancelled my free streaming membership today. If you signed up for the free streaming a month ago, it will expire this Friday and you'll be charged the $7.99 a month.

I thought the selection was crappy. Hardly anything current or any new releases. That's why I cancelled.

    • my thought exactly...except i forgot to cancel for a couple months while not using itrusty_ace
  • brandelec0

you're right the selection is crap. however it is nice to see that they're adding titles on what seems to be a daily basis

    • yeah they are, maybe in a year or so I'll recheck it outmegE
  • brandelec0

and if you have kids.. full seasons of cat in the hat, ren & stimpy, and curious george is god-send

    • just avoid the spike tv ren & stimpy episodes if you have kidsscarabin

Just cancelled my account, a week before the free trial ended.

Selection is SHIT. Not just bad or mediocre but pure fucking shit. But the real problem was that in the 3 weeks I used it, they barely got any new titles, except for the odd Criss Angel: Mindfreak special and British period dramas from the mid 80s.

Either they really cocked it up, or the Canadian regulators cock blocked them hard.

    • what 'Canadian regulators ' ?Dodecahedron
    • their selection is based purely on what licensees they can access and affordDodecahedron

i watched fish tank the other night. and also tokyo gore police. other than that i don't think there's content on there that'll keep me interested for very long. they need more tv series... like true blood or beans baxter, etc.

  • eryx0

I am pretty happy so far with my subscription and will keep it for now. There are some syncing issues and I agree they need to improve their catalog.

I would rather watch shitty TV shows and Movies for $8 a month without commercials than watch shitty TV shows and Movies for $30 a month with commercials on cable.

You can always download the movies and shows they don't have, seriously how many good movies do you schedule to see on basic cable anyway?

    • or you can just not pay for cable and get it all for free on the web. I'm willing to pay, but it's got to be competitive.ThePublics

    netflix is amazing.
lots of good stuff instantly available, and quick delivery of newer films on dvd.
    i think it's $10/month, but I'm on a 6 month gift certificate.

    • Not the Canadian NetflixmegE
    • yeah, its a bit meh... except for the deadliest catch...ross

i think netflix is a really great concept and it will eventually be a apples to apples contender with walk-in video stores like blockbuster. it's where we're headed, all digital, delivered immediately. it's what's beginning to be expected by consumers.

in my mind the only thing holding it back, in canada anyway, is selection and timing. i personally want to see basically 'everything' i'm going to have available to me at the video store; that's basically it. this is especially true for tues. new releases.

until that day happens it can't really compete with walk-ins. however, when that day happens, and it clearly will at some point, blockbuster and rogers and all the others are going to be in alot of trouble. we've already seen this situation in vancouver specifically with the disappearance of music stores like sam, a&b sound, etc. RIP.

    US here.

My only real complaint about netflix is how severely lacking they are as far as new releases go. And by new releases I mean movies that have been out for at least a month. It seems as if netflix is low-man on the totem pole when it comes to new flix out on dvd. And getting brand spanking new ones to stream instantly - forget it.

Outside of that - which if you don't mind doing a little searching for all those gems you might have missed over the years - netflix can be a very rewarding experience. I've probably got 20-30 titles on my instant queue that i've been slowly wading through, not to mention getting dvd's of older sci-fi / action flicks I missed over the last decade. All in all it's worth the $8/month.

  • brandelec0

    ^ agree

for $8/month i can't complain to much. and if their library continues to expand.. value only increases.

  • prophet0

i just decided to check the latest netflix offerings tonight... this one looks good?

  • jetSkii0

I cancelled my account. There is Netflix competition here. Once you realize that all you have time for is 2 DVDs a month. Paying $8 is kinda stupid when you can Redbox it. These guys are popping up all over the place

    • saw one of these in Safeway. like $3 or $4 and they are new releases only basically...prophet

So I just cancelled my account, I had zero reason to extend it for even one more month considering there is nothing on there. They have some decent flix but they've been seen before and they don't seem to really have much originality in the selection or new ones. Some of the movies I wonder how anyone thought it would be a good choice for netflix, there's a doc about NASA that shouldn't even be shown on public TV. Some titles can be legally seen for free by anyone on youtube and else where. If they're planning on expanding the site's content they better hurry up because they're going to lose a shit load of the initial members they've gotten since they launched.

Netflix seemed to make a lot of mistakes entering the Canadian market. One was not even attempting to appeal to Canadians, no canadian section and they didn't even attempt to get original canadian content besides TPB etc. I can think of a more than a few titles and series that would appeal to canadians for on demand streaming.

Another was putting the 'cancel membership' option second in the account panel. Thats nice they made it easy for me to find but like if you're a company depending on membership fees to cont. you should at least make it a little difficult to figure out how to cancel the account. I also expected to be bombarded with survey questions before I cancelled, why are you leaving? what can we do better? etc. They asked enough questions using the site asking for ratings and taste preferences they should ask why I'm cancelling my account before they've even charged me anything. New companies always push customer feedback surveys and I sort of wanted to let them know what they were doing wrong.

    • I should've made some screen shots of all the shit that sucked...crapeieio
  • jacklalane0

I canceled my free trial and told them in the survey that their selection was the reason. The price is right but if I'm not going to use it why bother. I hope in a year or two they get the rights to expand their really weak catalogue.

    • what survey?eieio
    • I had to fill out a survey why I was leaving. maybe you missed.jacklalane
    • I was expecting that but it was swift, pressed cancel, got a generic warning about partial month payments then a canceled emaileieio
    • ...email saying my membership is officially cancelled.eieio

it's better than Rogers / Bell Movie channel selections and cheaper.

    • True. But I would never even consider giving those assholes extra billing.jacklalane

Some people in the US might not understand what a grip the main telecommunications companies in Canada have on us.

First you only have two main players Rogers and Bell. Here are your basic plans

    http://www.bell.ca/shopping/PrsS…
    https://www.rogers.com/web/link/…

Notice how the pricing and even the names are almost identical, pretty much the definition of an Oligopoly.

As everyone in Canada knows that the prices you see on the website are no where near what you pay when it comes to Bell or Rogers. There are service fees, rental charges, taxes, hookup fees it goes on and on......and on.

You can pay over $100 without blinking and you still don’t get new release and you still have to deal with commercials in one way or another.

    $100 / month

Netflix is $8 a month. Yes the selection is not chalked full of Blockbusters, yes you have to depend on your ISP to not jerk you around, (usually Rogers or Bell anyway). But they charge you $8/month (no service fees, or rental fees). Also for me the selection is great for what I want. I am not a big fan of Jersey Shores and American Idol and as long as I can get the news on and Hockey on CBC through an antenna I am happy.

But now in Canada it is possible for you to purchase a netflix account. Buy a device like apple tv for nearly the price of a one month subscription, which you can rent movies for$.99

$10/month for apple TV (to own)
    $8/month netflix

you can still rent 12 movies a month and still be under the basic cable package.

For some people it’s not a big deal you can download any movie you want and lets face it free is free.

But this type of setup allows people like my parents to have a reasonable content for a reasonable price that is easy to access.

    Thanks for reading my Rant.
