I already realize I'm a complete idiot but the fact is, my Lumix camera just went through a partial wash cycle in the washing machine. I feel like I'm going to be sick just thinking about it. Any advise on how to save it?
I've taken the battery and memory card out and currently have the camera sitting in a container of rice (I've read that will help absorb the moisture). Any other ideas?

Well, don't turn it on whatever you do.
get a packet of salt and a tupperware - fill bottom half with salt, overlay ith a sheet or two of kitchen towel, put camera on top - seal and leave ina warm place for a couple of days. If it doesn't work after that, it doesn't work.

Put it in the tumble dryer for an hour

No don't use salt, it'll work its way into the innards like sand.
Take out the battery and put both into a bowl of dry, uncooked rice. The rice will wick away the moisture and you may be able to salvage it. Shame on you though!

I saw a programme about this on the gadget show, the best method of drying out electrical items, A hairdryer might help.

I had the same accident.
I took away the battery and put the camera in a dry place for a couple of days.
It's stille here and working!

I'm concerned about the affect of the detergent, and whether or not any residue was left behind. I'd check into professional cleaning.

I did this with my cell phone years ago, i saw it going round and round in the little round window in the washing machine.... quite funny, it worked for 3 seconds once I had it out, but then it died....

During the hurricane/tornado in NY the last week, I came home after work to find my living room drenched (left 3 south facing windows open) along with my 5DMK2 and MBP (unibody).
I almost shit myself after cursing at the lord in heaven.
Fortunately, after a half hour of mopping and wiping off my precious toys, all worked without a snag. The mbp was closed up. I never leave my windows open now...

Use your microwave to dry out the camera, this worked for Fouty several years back....

this may sound of the opposite of what you want but it works..
Vodka, since it is an alcohol will evaporate the water with its contents quicker than rice will absorbing the moisture, offcourse if you use rice and vodka together it may help out but a wash cycle that is completely submerged and agitated.. you may just have an electronic rock.. with 2 usages.. paper weight or a great thing to skip across the lake..then pour yourself a nice cup of vodka and eat some rice..
done et done!!
..just for thought.. when you threw your clothing in the wash didnt you feel some extra weight or something else in the garments?
perhaps what you need is a heavier gadget one that will be noticed in case you fuck yourself again..

my leica d-lux got in the ocean, just a little bit, its been in a dry place for almost 2 years, and still doesnt work.
my iphone also went surfing, but i managed to fix it by replacing some parts.

If you took it apart and cleaned to boards with iso you could save the electronics. But there's no simple way to take apart the lens or all the tiny motors that control the focusing. Chances are it's toast.

Like others have said .. don't switch it on. Don't use salt - will lead to corrosion.
Water shouldn't be too much of a problem, as long as you give it enough time to evaporate.
The danger with switching it on while it's wet, is that water is a conductor, and can short some of the smaller circuits in the camera. If shorting occurs, some of the small components can easily be blown - leading to circuit failure.
Possibly take it apart (sensibly though; so you're still able to put it back together) - and let it dry naturally somewhere warm (like an airing cupboard).

stick it in a deep container of rice for a week or so.
I've done this with cell phones that drop in liquids. the rice will absorb the water and with a few prayers you'll activate life's undo switch.
