So I came to a conclusion that I would like to pursue a career working at an agency.
Iv only worked as an in-house designer for corporate companies. Can't really afford interning at an NYC agency, what would some of you recommend?

If you are good, it shouldn't be a problem.

from what I've seen in agency's that I've worked at, even if you suck, it shouldn't be a problem.

Try to get on a freelance roster. Then get the AD and account minion to be in your corner.
- Going from currently being full time to freelance.. a little scary for me.Audria
- Throw some feelers out there. Those guys are always looking for good people. Call them. Have a convo.harlequino

Agency = talk the talk, not necessarily walk the walk.

contact the recruiter. lower standards than you think unfortunately.

From your work, it seems like you like like you actually have some talent. That talent will be neglected as you seek your experience in the agency world.
- ha! just some.. still working on gaining more talentAudria

some agencies chew people up and spit them out every few months.... you might have a good chance at one of those..... if that happens, try to make friends and not get burned out.....
some agencies are good, (not incurably random).. those agencies are harder to get into, but reward great work....
many good creatives have worked at least one or two strange vibe places before they find a great place....

What type of agency? ... like a big Ad Agency (JWT, BBDO, W+K, etc), or Branding Agency (Wolff, Interbrand, etc), or Design Agency (Pentagram), or hybrid place like Mother, or would you consider an established design shop like Doyle Partners an agency?
- either a branding agency or one with fashion accountsAudria

All you need to do is make contacts in the agency world. A strong network of people can take you pretty far. Even with a mediocre portfolio. Having a network of people can even get you past the annoying and long interview phase. Cha-ching!!!

Best thing to do is to ring a place that you'd like to work at, even if they aren't recruiting, ask if you can send your C.V. , cover letter and a mini portfolio in. Simply by ringing instantly proves to them that you're a designer that can actually talk to people, and therefore, can talk to clients confidently etc if you're hired.
Make sure your work is really varied and the best it can be. . . and most importantly, NO spelling or grammar errors in it AT ALL. Most Creative Directors I've spoken to just don't tolerate it.
Eventually you'll get an opportunity, and more often than not it because they feel can work with you rather than how incredible your work is.
PLUS, Don't worry, if you've set your heart on working for a particular agency and they don't hire you, it's probably for the best and you wouldn't wanna work for them anyway.
Christ I've rattled on a bit, but hope it helps you on your way.
- and I've gone and made loads of grammar errors! shucks!robulation

"Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency" is the name of an episode of Mad Men.
It has the most drastic scene this show ever had, I kind of wish I had skipped this one.

Are you getting some blowback from working inside?
I'm a little lost how "interning in New York" is in the picture?
You're more than likely to be picked up by an agency that has clients in similar industries or brand positioning.
I'm not sure that's what you want but... Considering the economy, I think it really depends on what you want to get out of an agency.
