attacking ships in international waters is an act of piracy
- Dude. Chicks wearing socks. Where are your priorities, man?! ;)Continuity

So you think that what seems to be a total lack of respect for other peoples lifes or religion is just something that evolved the last 50 years? Maybe, just maybe it has something to do with the fact that these people think that they are nothing else than Gods people.
- That's only part of the equation. The Jewish Question is far too large - like most things of a religious or political nature - to be filtered down to one concept.Continuity

- Right you are.inv

Are you saying the jewish people warranted, deserved or should have expected persecution by the nazis because they think they are God's people?

Turkey has withdrawn its ambassador to Israel. They were Israel's closest Muslim ally.
This act has lead to even further isolation.
Currently no statement of the the UK government.

just now on twitter:
OSauvage: RT @activistgirl: RT @Umm_Issa @AngryFromMCR @Omar_Gaza BREAKING: A Turkish MP is among the dead #freedomflotilla #flotilla #gazathis might turn really ugly very soon. there were a few european MPs on those ships too but israel is holding back all details.

- No it won't. Strong international reaction has been pure routine for Israeli diplomats for years.Lillebo
- Ugly? Yeah, right. There have been countless opportunities for it to get 'ugly' for Israel, but there is zilch political will to prosecute any measure of ugliness anywhere else in the world.Continuity

The only _real_ short-term geopolitical impacts I see coming from this are:
- Turkey saying 'Screw you guys, I'm going home'
- Iran jumping up and down, trying to say, 'I told you so'
- the US and UK dishing out the usual meaningless platitudes (something about 'measured discussion' in the same sentence with 'right to defend itself')
- the EU rolling its eyesAnother week, and it's back to the status quo.

it's amazing to see how quickly the IDF spin machine try to get their story straight across the various chanels.

well, they knew israel was going to stop them, regardless of any international law(s). I'm not justifying Israel's action, certainly no logical human being could, however they should've known it would end up like this.
- There is a reasonable expectation, though, that Israeli would respect the notion of international waters.Continuity
- reasonable? not really, considering their past actions that clearly defy international law.dorf
- Yeah, sorry. I was judging things on how I would act.Continuity

remember, when all the world was searching for the womd? question is, whrer there any weapons on this ships? and why didn't the israelis guide the ships somewhere to search them?
- the israelis suggested the ships go through ashdod port where they would be searchedadded_valium
- well. so it's stupid to do not so.pascii

I doubt they didn't know the dangers of what they were doing considering Israel has attacked many aid ships in the past. I doubt they thought they would murder 10 or more civilians.
also, it is worth pointing out the use of collective punishment and the blocking of the gaza port is subject to a UN security cuoncil resolution that Israel are ignoring.
"SECURITY COUNCIL CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE, DURABLE, FULLY RESPECTED CEASEFIRE IN GAZA LEADING TO FULL WITHDRAWAL OF ISRAELI FORCES
Resolution 1860 (2009) Adopted by 14 in Favour, Abstention by United States;
Also Calls for Unimpeded Humanitarian Assistance, Welcomes Egyptian Initiative
Gravely concerned by the deepening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the resulting heavy civilian casualties “since the refusal to extend the period of calm” between Israel and Hamas, the Security Council this evening stressed the urgency of and called for an “immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza”.

@ NickKristof I didn't RT early reports of Israeli military assault on #Gaza flotilla, 'cause I thought "Israel wldn't be that stupid."

- Actually, stomach. I take that back.detritus
- So the Israeli Commandos with a million dollars worth of training and the latest in soldier gear had trouble with a few guys with metal poles and a firebomb? Cool story bro.madmanGerald
- inv0
"large metal objects" and molotov cocktails are sticks and stones compared to the weapons at IDFs disposal. What they did is the equivalent to using live fire at angry protestors. And on neutral ground to make matters worse!

Guy at left, at 2:41 doesn't look like IDF Special Ops. Appears to be wielding gun.
- lowimpakt0
he's probably one of teh two the the IDF already said took weapons from soldiers.
"The violent activists took these pistols from IDF forces and apparently opened fire on the soldiers as evident by the empty pistol magazines."
