Also, I can imagine Apple will plug this heavily in the educational sector. It's cheaper than a laptop, yet runs, pages, numbers and keynote - all apps that students can make use of. Classrooms will be full of these in the next couple of years.

Is the iPad the equivalent of putting rims on your Kindle? Doesn't matter, I'll still want one.

I WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP CRYING ABOUT FLASH!!!
You are not a true Apple fanboi if you EVER thought Flash would make it onto this device.
Hah. Haha.

I'm really surprised that any designers here actually thought you would be able to run Adobe apps on this, let alone any app that is not from the App Store.
Hah. Haha.

The reading capability could be a win....I really am curious if it's a migraine inducer or not. That's been the problem with digital books from the beginning....the media they use just can't replace a tangible book.
I work for a publishing co and we are all on edge to figure out what the next media will be to publish for.
- this is it...monospaced
- media = mediumdesignbot
- could be...it might not even be the device but the platform or software for the device. Since touch tablet are gosing to be everywhere soon.designbot
- *going to be everywhere soon. Pretty much every major manufacturer has one planned now.designbot
- Precisely. The iPad is simply the first of its kind, and will set the bar high for the rest.monospaced

I think we're in the middle of a divide. Most people simply don't need a full computer all the time. The iPhone proves this, without argument.
Over the next few years we'll see a redefining of what we call "personal" computers and they will be different from what we consider "work" computers. Personal computers should be simpler, pared down, mobile entertainment and web information devices. Not that many people need to bring a full machine with them wherever they go, and if they do, they will. For most people this "type" of machine is ideal.
Plus, with all the publishers moving toward a digital "rich" format, we will see several devices that will tap into their subscriptions. The iPad is kind of the beginning (not counting the Kindle).

Had an epiphany... its a portable media player
I use my iphone to watch the bbc iplayer.
If all the tv companies start allowing Video on demand through wireless.... I just watched Man utd on the Sky sports app on my iphone.
The screen is just big enough to be a portable tv, e-reader, Stereo system given a decent set of speakers - especially wireless ones...
It could (in italics) be the device that actually quickens the wireless TV revolution that coming, the streaming not owning of music, the renting of books and the wireless stereo. Is it the convergence device?
I dont like the way it looks, but ALL media companies from EMI to Fox to BBC to SKY to TIME to Every paper ever NEED a device to move their business model on.
This is the life boat that might take them to dry land? Everyone will follow and you know they will...
- finally someone else is thinking about the bigger picture and not just bitching about flash and cameras like a douchemonospaced
- I know for a fact that a couple of the major uk magazine publishers are very excited about it as a real viable platform for their contentdorfsman
- for their content and subsequent subscription models (another debate I know)dorfsman

I tend to be as perplexed and somewhat irritated by all the mac hyperbole as much as the next man.... but this product will eventually be a resounding success. It makes the kindle look positively archaic.

"The size just seems kind of awkward though. Are you really going to lug something like that around over a laptop? It's not a true computer, so you can't really do work on it. It's more of a portable entertainment device. So now are we supposed to lug one around in tandem with a laptop? The whole thing just seems more novelty than necessity."
Simple answer: it's not for everybody. For me, it actually makes sense. I do 95% of my "work" at work. I leave my work laptop there most of the time. When I'm home, I browse the web on my iMac or play around with my iPhone. When I commute and travel, I don't always want to bring work with me. So, the iPad actually fills a niche. It's much more powerful and accessible than the iPhone, it will bring publishing into the mobile era (better than Kindle or anyone else) and will provide me with the ability to browse the web and be entertained.
The whole point is that I don't have to lug around an entire laptop that's burdened down with a full OS, low battery life and a real keyboard. Essentially, it's the ideal "away from work" machine for people who don't need everything all the time. Anyone else agree?
- But do you really want to waste your money on this transition-computer? I get what you're saying though.designbot
- Just seems like one more device you don't really need. I guess that's consumerism at it's finest.designbot
- No, I'll wait until it's improved in the 2nd or 3rd generation, as I usually do.monospaced
- yeah, good choice.designbot

"you could just do Flash apps accessible via a browser."
You could. Apple wont make any $$$ from that though and that's the primary reason they don't allow flash. Makes microsoft look like open source.
They'll probably block HTML5 next.
- wait for the Android tablet at $199, that runs flash and takes over the worldclearThoughts

So, is the iPad Apple's Vista?

it is a new medium nothing like it out there, and a new avenue for content publishers , iLikeiT
- which really means absolutely nothing unless it actually sells. If it sells, then publishers will take notice.designbot
- publishers KNOW it's going to sell; that's why they hopped on board.monospaced
- I work for a publisher and everyone seems to be waiting to see...designbot
- with so much existing content for it (apps) it should be a hitBattleAxe

The fact that it doesn't display Flash is Bullshit really... you could just do Flash apps accessible via a browser.
Plus - no video on websites?
What are you supposed to do? Use Quicktime movies? Or does Safari on the iPda support HTML5 video?

What a disappointment.
