Has Tesla actually been releasing cars to their customers or are they still on back order?
I worry about what happens if the company goes out of business and you're stuck with expensive proprietary tech than no one else can repair.
- I think they only sell the 2 seater. US gov gave tesla like $800 million a few months agoFredMcWoozy

Also, did any of you guys read that WIRED article a few years ago about Zap Electric Cars? http://www.zapworld.com/
That company is shifty.

I think some one has missed a trick with electric cars.
i used to rally, most of all i love the noise and control of dropping down gears hearing the revs wine, popping exhaust etc. electric cars are far too quiet. if they're making an aston salon type thing i hope it makes super sci-fi noises. consult the star was sound effects people. make it sound good, then i'm top of the list for an electric car.until then i'll stick with a ford fiesta with a broken exhaust.
- It tickles my geek to think of engines so powerful, they don't waste energy on making noise... That's proper sci-fi!detritus
- a problem with the sound is danger to cyclists and pedestrians - some leccies are making artifical car soundslowimpakt

- Maybe they should just play a loop of the Star Trek theme on external speakers.ETM

Biggest problem for Tesla is that this car won't even start production until 2012. The other automakers are working hard on their EV cars. It may be hard for Tesla to ever get out of the niche/specialty market and achieve the 20,000 units a year they want when they are no longer so unique.

Perhaps someday the infrastructure will be so developed that all electric cars will be either always plugged in (wireless) or have the ability to be charged wirelessly, like in parking ramps.
- "plugged in (wireless)"?
I think you're overcomplicating things...

"Rattner reassured us that pumping kilowatts of power around the home through magnetic induction power is absolutely harmless. “The human body is not affected by magnetic fields,” he said as one journalist with a pacemaker collapsed and another with a knee replacement watched his leg catch fire. “There’s no danger whatsoever from it, any more than there is from mobile phones cooking your brain, microwave leakage blinding you, chemical waste unraveling all the DNA in your balls or statistical clusters of kids with cancer wherever high-tension power lines run overhead. Asbestos and thalidomide were horribly slandered in their day too.”

Nissan has it's new EV Leaf compact coming out next year and has deals to create power stations across America. Its not as large or as cool as the new Tesla, but Tesla may get left behind quick with their limited resources in comparison to the large automakers making big pushes.

Nice styling. A viable alternative.

Other than the Chevy Volt, which has the gas backup, will any of these cars be good for anything beyond metro driving?

Minimal range was one of the arguments used against the EV1 (GM's electric) back in the late 70s. The truth is, rarely does a driver ever exceed 200 miles in one shot. For me it's about a few times a year.
If we got to a point where folks were driving electric and then renting a gas bag only for the long hauls, that would be a good thing... I think.

get a train.

I can't help thinking electric cars will be looked back on like those crazy ideas jet-powered cars from 50 years ago. There are specific benefits but on a broad scale how screwed would we be demanding all that electricity to run them? It's going to take more than a few windmills to generate...
This is a nice looking car but it ain't solving anything.

Get used to it.. Everything is going to be electric, especially when we finally solve fusion power and have lots of cheap power.
Unfortunately the best estimate is 2070 for commercial fusion, but hey we can use up all the oil just in time for that...

Solar power is rapidly evolving
