hey all
I'm about to print my portfolio, if you guys have any cool ideas for the presentation i would love to hear them. I'm thinking A3 with a custom made box or bind, but I'm open to any cool suggestions.
Cheers

Keep it simple and let the work do the talking. if the interviewer comments more on how the portfolio is housed than what the work is like you've done something wrong.

You want to get your hands on a nice pretty box!!!!!

I love a good box

I agree, all about the work. My last folio was a casebound book, with a debossed cover, which was always well received, however the need to constantly update means I now use a simple 24pp leather book with plastic sleeves.

how is that is working out for you?
- It got me a job!!!uncle_helv
- but are you happy? :)Sinov
- Does that really matter?uncle_helv

I was thinking about a box that has a tuxedo embossed on the front, like a tux t-shirt, that says I wanna be formal but I'm here to party.
What you reckon?- nahfiesta
- really? I was sold on that one, anyway thanks for giving us your insightful opinion.Sinov
- I'm with fiesta, it sounds a bit weird?!uncle_helv
- that was a joke, from talladega nights.Sinov

- Hey Neue I'm glad you got it lol. Aussie sarcasm isn't picked up very well by some ppl. lol. But seriously, I am thinking long and hard about the tuxedo box lol...Sinov

I'm working with a roughly A4 hardcover book format at the moment [I've got a binder who'll do 3 of them for me quite inexpensively] I was doing something similar, an A3 landscape, screen-printed cardboard cover, tip-ins, wire bound, but I feel doing the book might be better, a bit more compact and tbh, I want to pretty much just have one image per page and doing that with A3 just isn't feasible..
but who knows, I'll probably change my mind again next week...

Letting my work speak for itself aside, is there any cool ideas that peeps have noticed and would like to share. ;)

How about something interactive on a USB instead?
- to show in the interview?
Hi Im here for the job interview have you got something that i can plug this into... :)
Sinov - Never had an issue.monoboy
- bad idea and I was at an interview for a web position and they didnt even have a laptopFallowDeer
- to show in the interview?

ok, I used an thin aluminium pipe as a binder and grayboard for the covers, printed out all the internal sheets on an a3 inkjet printer and cut two grooves into all the paper/card to hold it into the binding like a clamp. It meant as work changed all I needed to do was replace those sheets without re-binding the whole thing.

Combine the above with a laptop to show and multimedia work you may have, saved to the hard drive, just in case theres no internet connection when you arrive (which happened me once).
And if you want to have hard copies of pieces to show if requested, its not a bad thing. Though this is optional.

maybe a pop-up book?
- // it wouldn't be time consuming or expensive..neue75_bold
- A tuxedo pop-up book perhaps lol. I am glad you have a sense of humour Neue lolSinov

But seriously all joking aside, I really want to print the portfolio as the PDF has problems displaying the high resolution images on-screen at different scales. I think the printed medium would be best so thank you for the suggestion but maybe if we can stay within the realms of print that would be great. :)

I saw another folio which was plain brown card for the cover, with a3 sheets folded for the work. The whole thing was folded to just bigger than A4 and hand-sewn on the left side for binding. The internal sheets had an identity in black on one side which folded out to reveal the rest of the project. It was simple, the work was neat, well executed and got the person two jobs I know of. And, it was light, and if they wanted a leave-behind they could just use that an make a new one.

I was thinking about doing a harmonica fold with two thick pieces of card for the front and back cover - separately attached (which would allow me to have double page A3 spreads with front and back printed), but I am not too sure how well it would work and if the scoring / in-house print consumables would suffice (EG: 260GSM paper)... It would be cheap I think, but not too sure if it would be effective. Idea came from an art exhibition where it was used for a catalogue of work.

What do you guys think about adding a musical device to each page so when you open the first one it may play "Australian National Anthem" followed on the next page by some Pet Shop Boys (in MIDI of course) maybe "Go West". We could progress to something like "Achey Breaky Heart" by Billie Ray?
- Waltzing Matilda for the win...neue75_bold
- you need some 'Men at Work'Amicus

I think what the kids have said above is the best advice. If you don't have a lot of cash to work with and if you're using in-house resources, definitely keep it simple... I interview a lot of people and the biggest problem isn't what the work is housed in, it's how they've laid out the work and presented things on a page... If you're going to spend the time, spend it wisely and make sure you try to tell a complete story of each project.. Think of the order in which the work is presented and how you build up each project..
- Thanks bro.Sinov
- And theeeeeennnnnn?Sinov
- oh c'mon, I'm not gonna wipe your arse too...neue75_bold

^ I agree.
I don't think anyone cares as long as the work speaks for itself, its professional and error free. Start big, end bigger. and explain yourself and your ideas, quickly and concisely.Laptop - with actual samples of good print work. Always worked for me and I got every job I ever applied for.
- I even bought a load of cheap usb memory sticks which had a copy of my Book & CV.... that they couldn't delete!HomeCreative
