i'd jsut hit up zipzoomfly.com or newegg.com and see what deals are to be had, narrow some choices down then do some google searchs on the ones u liked and choose. bang for buck will probably be a toshiba or acer

best response of the year goes to Kelpie
"thanks, so I can get a system I don't want 2nd hand for 200 above my budget, cheers for the info"
One day I will use that.

"once again, *I will not be buying a mac*"

I got a 15" Macbook Pro 2.4ghz for £700 from Ebay (17" can be bought for that money too). So glad I got it over a PC, it's far nicer to present to clients with.

I got a 15" mbp, 15" is fine for me. I had a 24" imac. 24" was fine for me too.

to be fair, that's still a bit over my budget - the XPS 16 ramps up to round 850 once you've added the extra ram as well, so I'm going to have to compromise somewhere on performance etc to get an actual machine in my hands

My girlfriend also has a HP Pavillion which are actually surprisingly good - performance wise. Coming in just under £800 for the cheapest.

Hello kelpie,
Stay away from Sony VAIO's. Overpriced pieces of shit. I've had two (not that i bought them, one was a credit card swindle the other an insurance scam). Worst part of them is the way they ar "packaged" that destorys the sort of versatility and flexibilty you want in a PC.
Personally i think Dell by far make the best systems. I would drool over a Dell Precision - but that probably out of your price range. If you're buying a new laptop, you should still consider an XPS. You can get a decent low-end one from around £1000.
I wouldn't go under 17" if this is your primary computer. Don't even think about it.

I tend to avoid Sony's for computers. Don't get me wrong they make great hardware, but they come so pre-loaded with so much proprietary Sony Brand software crap it's just not worth it...

although having said that about 16" screens, from the looks of things they are actually less deep at 768px than the 15.4 at 800px, though wider. that's a bit shit actually :-/

thanks very much chaps, I had heard some time ago that Toshiba were a good bet, and the models you've picked out lvl look pretty good for my needs.
on the desktop thing as a side point as well nairn, I reckon as I'm 95% of the time designing in 72dpi I reckon performance wise I can get away with it easy as long as I've sufficient RAM at my disposal - in those terms I think the portability adds real value

or you could go even cheaper with something like:
($600.00 US)
