What's up with people calling him "Shep".

re marchelo ... its interesting to see how there's people that have known about him a long time then there's still a lot who don't. everyone seems to get excited about him in the same way as he waves through different levels of people. hell, my mom brought up shepard fairey the other day asking if i knew who he was. she also just gave me a copy of the tipping point saying its great and i should read it.

In related news, I really hope that asshole sourmath didn't just send a virus to my brand-new computer when I clicked on his profile link.
Thanks QBN for deleting that immediately.

its interesting that everyone on here always hates on fairey, and yet that is how there is always hype around him. any publicity is good publicity, im sure he would thank all of us on here for bringing his name up EVERY damn day. i personally think he's got some cool stuff, but alot of his "work" is a def a rip off of other crappy artwork. but who cares? is the poster at the beginning of this thread really that great? no, and neither is the ripoff of it that fairey did. i look forward to reading tomorrow's "new" thread against him...

What's really sad about the creative industry these days is that its all geared to spin now, and everyone thinks its only good to have something positive to say. Criticism is so taboo now and anyone risking it is stoned to death for 'hating'. Somewhere along the line this idea of hating has emerged and taken hold and it prevents any honest critical discourse from taking place. Its like a sort of popculture fundamentalism.
Just because a number of people do not appreciate Shephard Fairey's methods or results does not make their views invalidated or mean they are haters, it means they are engaged in the ongoing creative debate and have points of view beyond the merely sychophantic.
Relentless positivism is a very bad thing. Be brave, liberate your critical faculties, speak your minds you brainwashed Fairey loving brown-nosed sycophantic hipster scumbag Spinpuppets.
And I've never heard of RISD Ascence.
That some kind of special school?- For my part, I don't hate Fairey. The process & execution of Obey as a campaign was without precedence and I admire him for it.Horp
- admire him for that. The Obama piece though... lets be honest. Effective piece of communication, but why deny the obvious truth.Horp
- the obvious truth of its creation?Horp
- whos denying?dewilde

RISD: Rhode Island School of Design
it is very popular to say you went there if you went there, as far as I can tell.
- Oh. I have heard of it. I wasn't aware it was meant to be impressive however.Horp

Personally, I’m of the opinion that Shepard Fairey is on his way to becoming a line item under the “filters” drop down menu. But I’m not really trying to further the debate of whether what Fairey does should be considered wrong or right. Appropriation is all over the place, I’m guilty of it myself. I’ve never achieved fame by doing it–but somehow, I don’t think that’s a solid standard of ethics in this case.
When I was a student, I copied my favorite designers. In fact, I was encouraged to. There is something to be said about student’s copying a great design. It’s not unlike doing a master study of one of the great painters. You start to see why choices were made, what went where and when. You begin to get the process and it helps you wrap your head around what goes into making something of worth.
However, this is only true of execution. The danger is when students or professionals begin to “borrow” the ideas. And we see that a lot too.
I don’t know if Fairey is liable for ripping off the photographer, I don't care--it makes for entertaining banter either way. But I’m not impressed with his one and seemingly only style. At the core of it’s function, graphic design is about communicating a message. The best messages are usually transmitted through great ideas.
Appropriation aside--how GREAT can an idea be when it’s completely possible to replicate through one click of an upload button? ( http://obamiconme.pastemagazine.… )
