In related news, I really hope that asshole sourmath didn't just send a virus to my brand-new computer when I clicked on his profile link.
Thanks QBN for deleting that immediately.

Having read Milton Glaser's comments I am even more inclined to feel that Fairey's work is somewhat bankrupt and indicative of the contemporary malaise in the creative industry. Bottom line is he could not have made that image without the original photograph.
Seeing the Fairey appropriaton of the Muller Brockman poster image confirms it beyond all doubt to me. Detached from the Obama arguement it becomes clear when looking at that example that it is rank plagiarism.
A combination of 21st century digital laziness and a lack of the requisite drawing skills led Fairey to sample this image and he probably could have saved himself all the crap if he had just asked the photographer up front.

LOL, shep has "lack of the requisite drawing skills". your assumption, or perhaps something you read on the internets? listen, i did first year at RISD, as did shep. you don't get through first year at RISD as a hack or having no drawing skills. it's one of the toughest first years on the planet, look it up.
- my cousin went to RISD and all he did was take photos of nude girls with bags in their heads.zenmasterfoo
- on...not in...FAIL!zenmasterfoo
- i can't imagine it's really that difficult, having gone thru art school myself.arthur
- I've never fucking heard of RISD. I went to Central Saint Martins. You wont need to look that up.Horp

^ yeah... he's suing AP for suing him basically.
no one cared about it until now because he wasn't ripping off known and often living person's work until the past 5-6 years. before that it was all old propaganda that people shrugged their shoulders at.

I am a hack as well, and couldn't draw if my life depended on it

After reading this, and other articles on the subject, I am sad to say that I'm still torn.
While I like and can appreciate some of the ideas behind his work...I still can't shake that nagging question-- what is he saying to, and about the design community when he uses images for 'inspiration'
- magnificent_ruin0
perhaps it's not that big a deal

IDK, even though we all do it, I think all the bright colors and little characters for no reason at all and bullshit are pretty played out. I mean REALLY played out. Look at me, I'm an Artist. Cool! Shepard isn't doing anything Andy Warhol didn't do, so shut up and make something better. We ALL know he's hasn't done anything new in like the past 12 years, we know! No one has done anything significantly groundbreaking in a long time.

What's up with people calling him "Shep".
